Human Sexuality Behavior at the Nightclub
Introduction
A night club is always composed of different individuals of different genders, ages, and even different sexual orientations. This is so in instances when one visits the club on a normal night when the club does not have the various shows, for example, the 80’s show or when somebody visits a gay or lesbian club, since the composition of the club on that particular day or time will not really have variety as desired by this research. I visited the Sambordia Nightclub on a warm Friday evening in order to carry out the research and was able to make various realizations about human sexuality at the nightclub.
We must understand that human sexuality is the ability of human beings to respond in a particular manner which in most instances in an erotic manner when around the particular gender they are attracted to (Greenberg, Bruess and Oswalt, 2013) . These reactions may be brought about by various acts such as, seeing, thinking, fantasizing, beliefs and so forth. In order to be able to know that the individual’s sexuality, then it one must have the ability of spotting the difference in the person’s behavior around the person they are attracted to or even at times by looking at the behavioral changes that occur on this individual when around them (Wentland and Reissing, 2014). So due to this we have to consider the fact that human behavior is always determined by many factors, including the environment.
The environment plays a major role in determining how the individual how the individual acts towards the individuals around them. So in order to be able to get the best outcome from the research process, it was mandatory for the research to be carried out in an environment where all the individuals were at their normal state of mind. This is since in an area for example the bathroom or a private section; the individual will tend to act in a different manner as compared to the situation where he or she was around the general public. This essay will be able to stipulate the various findings that I was able to get from my two hours at the nightclub, pertaining to human sexuality interactions.
Background
The evening was warm and I arrived at the nightclub at about 10:00 P.M. was required to show my ID at the entrance by the security guard and by the fact that I was 21 years I was able to be allowed into the club. I paid a cover charge of 15$ and once I entered into the club, I was able to make various observations pertaining to the club and the individuals who were present at the club on that night.
Lighting
The club was dimly lit with the disco lights flickering all over the club bringing clearly the party feeling to the individuals. This created an environment that was favorable to adequately be able to carry out the sexuality interaction research effectively. This is mainly due to the fact that research has been able to show that human beings tend to be more confident during the night and rather dark places as compared to them being in an open place or other places like the hotels and the likes.
Setting
The club was divided into two sections, the dance floor and the sitting area. There were bar seats by the counter and hence individuals were able to take their drinks at the bar if they did not want to go and enjoy themselves at the dance floor. The dance floor was centrally located with the sitting area being surrounding the dance floor. However, most of the individuals were able to be seen to be dancing at their tables and the likes.
Demographic Makeup
The Club was made up of mostly youths who tended to be in their 20’s and the oldest seemed to be in their late 30’s however, there was some exceptions of 50 years old men at the clubs. However, the ladies tended to look younger than the stipulated 21 years and some even looked in their late teens and this was surprising due to the fact that the club had a 21 years prerequisite before one could enter the club. The racial composition of the individuals was equally balanced, but there were more White Americans at the club as compared to the African Americans and the Hispanics. However, all the races were equally represented at the club. At the club I was able to realize that the females were more than their male counterparts.
Dress code
Pertaining to the dress code at the club, I was able to realize that most of the individuals had official clothes but with no ties and the sleeves rolled up to bring out a casual look. On the other hand, the ladies were mostly in short, body hugging dresses with their clutch bags or purses looking all lovely and classy as they either sat at their tables or whether they were dancing at the dance floor. From my view this was the right attire for the club setting due to the fact that, I am of the opinion that most of the men were fresh from work and hence decided to stop by the club for one or two drinks or rather to have fun throughout the night. On the side of the ladies, the dresses were very suiting for the clubs and hence in my view they were appropriately dressed for the night.
Interaction
When I entered the club, I saw that the people were mainly sited with their friends as they talked and had fun together. But with time I was able to realize that various individuals approached various girls, be it on the dance floor or at their seats and at times they exchanged numbers or went to the bar to get a drink together. Throughout the night I did not see any gay or lesbian approach and neither did I see a lady approach a man.
Type of Music Playing
The DJ was playing a variety of genres of music, for example, hip hop, to techno and house and RnB songs. All these were played at different times of the night. These were categorized in the form of sets. In addition to this, I was able to realize that the DJ tried to ensure the crowd was also involved throughout the songs. For example, with them singing along to the songs or in some instances, having them screaming and the likes.
Advertisements made
Throughout the time, I was able to realize that the nightclub industry has tended to move from advertising their events by sticking posters on the walls or by posts, but has rather opted to advertise their events through the social media platforms. This way evident in instances that the screens in the club would urge the members of the audience to follow the club or the DJ on the various sites, from Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the likes. This may not be likened to the prior ways of advertising that the clubs used to use in the precedent years(Farrar et al., 2003) These advertisements would most cases involve a lady who is half naked or with a wet shirt hence one being able to see her breasts. This in turn leads to fantasize and will in turn lead to mainly the men being attracted to attend the events that have been advertised by the club, which will reciprocate in them having more revenue at their clubs (Farrar et al., 2003)..
Behavioral Results
Approaching the Opposite sex
All throughout the night I was able to spot various instances where the men went to approach either group of ladies or him approaching a single lady. This clearly shows the human sexuality behavior at the club due to the fact that they tend to always try their best to go and get into a conversation with the general mentality that they might get ‘lucky’ and go home with the lady. Throughout the night it was evident that when approaching a large group, the men would go as a group and approach the group and talk to them. This is mainly due to the general unwritten rule of being a brother’s ‘wingman’. This is mainly due to the fact that it is evident that an individual will always tend to be more courageous when in a group as compared to instances that they are alone (Crooks and Baur, 2013). So they would go approach the whole group and the others would always talk to the other members of the group while the person who wanted to talk to the lady would always tend to seclude the particular lady from the group and at times they would couple and go and dance together on the dance floor together. This may be attributed to the unwritten rule, that the individuals will always go to the dance floor together or in groups to have more fun. It would look awkward for individuals to go dancing alone unless they are trying to get the attention of a particular person (Zhang, Abler, Bao and Pan, 2014).
When it comes to couples at the club, I was able to realize that they were secluded from most of the club activities and spent the whole time together, dancing together and one or two instances of them kissing and grinding against each other (Held, 2015). This may be attributed to the fact that they will always tend to be more faithful to their partners when they are around them and they had come to the club to have a good time together. These individuals would not be approached as much as the ladies who come to the club alone or in instances that they came to the club in a group which was exclusively comprised of females. This in my view may be attributed to the general rule of not approaching the already colonized territory or rather just to the avert trouble. Research has been able to clearly show that approaching another man’s lady is among the major causes of fights if not the major cause of bar or club fights.
In most instances, the man would always approach the lady in instances that she looks at him in a suggestive manner or with a wink or a smile or in instances that the group giggles looking at that particular direction. Then the individual would in most instances consider this as a ‘sign’ and may approach her and hope to get sexual pleasures at the end of the night. This kind of behavior has been explained vividly under the Symbolic Interaction theory, which states that at times, various happenings would always pass some form of communication to the subject or object it is intended to reach. However, these activities may gain meaning over time and be understood by the members of the society without having to be told, due to them being used over time by members of the public, until it gains a universally acceptable meaning (Wentland and Reissingn, 2014). For example, the licking of the lips may be inferred to mean that the person wants to flirt or get naughty, whereas the wink will mean that the person’s interested in the other party and hence this may help the person gain the required ground to be able to approach the lady whom, he would have felt unable to approach earlier.
Ladies approached
In addition to this, it was clear that the men approached the ladies who tended to be younger than them. This was clear when even the older men who in my view seemed to be more of the Baby boomer generation, were even approaching ladies who were in the Y generation. This in my view may be attributed to the fact that men may be of the opinion that they should always be older than the ladies they approach.
Buying the ladies drinks
Throughout the night, I was able to realize that most of the time, in instances that the lady was approached by the guy, he would always offer her a drink or would offer to pay for her drink. This is an issue that may be said to be acting like a gentleman and hence getting to know her more or better. But the truth of the matter’s that the issue of buying her drinks will always be aimed at trying to get her drunk in order to go with her home and maybe get her to bed. This has been attributed to the belief that if she is drunk, she may easily accept for the sexual advancements from the man as opposed to instances that she is sober (Brewster, 2014).
In addition to this, this has been able to be explained as per the social exchange theory which stipulates that in most cases a positive actionwill always be reciprocated in one way or the other. So in this case, the man will always try to get the lady a drink with the aim and prayer that she would reciprocate his actions with them spending the night together.
Dancing Styles
At the dance floor, was able to make a realization of how the dance moves. The dance moves changed depending on the genre of the music that the DJ was playing. When the DJ played the Hip-hop songs, the people would pop the hip hop moves and when he changed to the trap music they would change into the trap dance moves and when he put the house music they would dance in the appropriate manner. Pertaining to the dance moves, I was able to realize that particular songs with particular dance moves from the yeet, to the dab and the whip and the likes. The club would go wild whenever these songs came on.
In addition to these sequenced dance moves, was able to realize that at times, a boy and a lady when dancing, the lady would whine her hips as she grinded on the man’s crouch (Van et al, 2013). These dance moves was mainly evident in the slow songs or when the fast songs came on. Grinding in most cases ended up in the two individuals kissing on the dance floor. With this it was evident that the human sexuality interactions would be evident when one is able to view the person’s behavior.
Leaving the Club
I left the club at around 1 AM and was able to male various observations pertaining to the behavior of the individuals at the nightclub. The individuals who left the club either in the groups that they had come with or in couples. The individuals who were too drunk were being helped to walk and hence in my view they were too vulnerable and likely to engage in sexual activities as compared to if they were sober. Most of the individuals left the club and boarded taxis to I guess their homes or wherever they thought best. At the exit as they left the club, there were many instances of PDA’s from deep kissing, to hugging and all the other public display of affection mechanisms. However, I did not see people having sex or other sexual activities that may be considered to be over the level. This in my view was due to the set, laws of the land which consider these to be among the category of the indecency acts which in turn may mean that they may be said to be contravening the indecency laws of the nation (Trautner, 2005).
