Although both the terms are quite similar and are used interchangeably with one another, corruption and official deviance in policing are quite different. In a nutshell, it can be said that corruption only forms one of the aspects of official deviance in policing, whereas deviance is highly related to the ethical side of official duties. Corruption is a matter of self-interest and morals of the individual who is concerned about a certain job.
Police deviation can be distinguished as the behavior that the police adopt when they hold a position of authority over the rest of the people. This can be seen as the behavior deviance, either a criminal or a non-criminal approach when coming across people either in correctional facilities or any person who is breaking the law. The other can be any kind of criminal work that the police could be committing under the guise of their uniform and the authority they have because of their position. The ethical side of the matter is when the police are discriminating in their service, have inappropriate conduct, use excessive force against people, intimidate others and use weapons that are supposed to be restricted. Corruption is one of the things they can do in this case. It happens to be a subset of deviance, and it is a hidden activity amongst officers. They can take money from criminals, as a bribe, or be involved in drugs, thefts and burglaries along with individuals.
The ethical consideration of the police officers is a major socialization process that is responsible for corruption and official deviation. When the police realize their position of prestige and the ability to inculcate fear in the people, then they are at times subject to misusing their power and exercising free control in society. It can also blur their concept of right and wrong thus the high acceptance that society provides for them is enough to engage them into deviance.
