In order to avoid data discrimination that can be committed by telecommunications corporations, the United States has already enacted a law called network neutrality or net neutrality. This law reclassified the internet service providers as public utility which will allow every person, organizations, or companies to have equal access to internet. The law will avoid the restriction or blocking of a certain data without court order. Net neutrality will also disallow corporations to give priority or lesser priority to groups of people with regards to the quality of internet service. The guiding principle of this law is to protect the consumers against any form of traffic discrimination.
On the other hand, some big time consumers and telecommunications companies warn that net neutrality may affect the quality of service as all the consumers will have equal access whether or not their data is irrelevant. Those who are in favour of the said law pressed that this is important for small businesses starters. Save The Internet which is an advocate of free press mentioned that net neutrality will help small entrepreneurs to advertise without paying high prices of space. They added that open internet is a fair playing ground for small business people. Plenty of organizations and companies that support the law said that telecommunications companies are not in favour of net neutrality because they want to be the gatekeepers of data which allows discrimination. Moreover, advocates of open internet through the net neutrality law will give space for communities of color and other marginalized groups to tell their stories as their stories are not landing in the mainstream media. The controversy therefore that revolved around the enactment of the law is not from the people but it came from the big companies who want control over data.
