Procedures:
- Warm up (5-7 minutes):
At the beginning of the lesson the teacher will tell students about her most exciting journey. After the story the following questions will be asked: Have you ever travelled? What countries, in your opinion, should be visited and why? How did you get there? Which transport?
- Development:
The lesson will be in the form of dialogue. The teacher will start from the famous quotation of Mark Twain: “Only two things we’ll regret on deathbed – that we are a little loved and little traveled”. The teacher will explain that trips are the joy of new experiences, brightness of unexplored emotions and huge delight that can turn even adult and serious people in earnest, rejoicing of the freedom children! The teacher will tell about different types of travelling paying special attention to the travelling by plane. Thus, people can choose inner journey (within the territory of the country of residence), inbound travel (travel within the country of persons who do not live there permanently), a visiting trip (outside the country of permanent residence), group tourism (committed group of people (from 7 people) traveling together, arriving and departing at the same time under the same conditions as for individually made plan, and the plan proposed by the tour company, which includes identification of areas visit, duration of stops, conditions overnight, etc.) and individual journey (the journey of one person (or small group) for individually made program). People can travel by foot, by train, by car, by bus, by ship, but there is nothing better than traveling by air. This is the fastest and convenient than any other method of travel.
The teacher will ask students about the favorite place they have visited in the world. After listening to stories, the teacher will provide with the procedure of travelling by plane such as a time, namely booking, luggage, peculiarities of flight, advantages and disadvantages of travelling by plane, etc. The teacher will inform that sale of air tickets has spectacular demand. This is an economical, comfortable, fast, travel option that allows for the shortest time to get to the resort of interest. This is ensured by an extensive network of lines of flight, which densely covers the globe, and allows people to choose a vacation, holidays and nearby towns and outlying islands.
The teacher will advise some tips how to travel by plane profitably (for example, using low-cost offers) or how to choose the good flight (to be able to read schedules of the airlines. Each flight is marked by a certain set of characters indicating exactly which service options are available when flying in a particular city). Also, the teacher will pay attention to the actions during ear popping on a plane and some security measures in flight (for example, during takeoff and climb people cannot get up from their seats and unfasten seat belts).
Activity1 (15 min):
The activity is aimed at informing students how to behave in the aircraft during the flight.
At first, teacher will ask about the associations with the following pictures and feelings experienced:

The next step is to provide students with the list of actions during the flight, which are:
- The main luggage should weigh approximately 15-25 kg. Some companies have their own rules, so this figure varies between 10 and 60 kg. Often, the number may also depend on the class you are flying. For example, economy class will allow you to carry only 20 kg, while the business class – up to 60.
- It is necessary to prepare immediately passport and boarding pass, trying to take a turn in the forefront, so it will be easier to find personal place in the aircraft and place for the luggage. Required items are kindly requested to be taken out from bags.
- Try to be the first to register and get good slot on the plane. Occupied slot at the beginning of the cabin the passenger will be the first, who receives lunch. Sitting in the tail, you will beseek due to shakes and swayed. It is better to choose a place on the shady side, as the sun interferes review. If you’re flying from north to south and flight is after 15.00, the sun will be on the right side. If up to 15.00 –in the left. And if from the south to the north –it will be opposite.
- Service of passengers on board is carried out by a flight attendant. Seatbacks should be upright, seat belts are fastened –so just follow all the instructions of board-conductors, and pass off without any problems. Remember some rules of behavior on the plane.
- In the plane you can read, work on the computer, and watch movies, write, and sleep. For long haul flights you will be shown a movie. During the flight, it is forbidden to create situations that threaten the safety of the flight; raise the voice or laugh out loud; use electrical appliances (phones during flight should be turned off); smoking (smoking permitted only by a few airlines, and only in special places); and drink alcohol (unless it is permitted by the rules of the airline).
Activity 2 (25 min.):
List of definitions is the following:
- Passport – in most states it is the official document certifying the identity of the citizen.
- Visa is so called mark of consulate or other authorized body in the passport of the person, who wants to visit a foreign country.
- Check-in is a procedure, in which people exchange their online tickets at boarding passes, which are their pass to board the plane.
- Boarding pass is a pass for the passenger to board the plane.
- Customs control is a set of measures for the control of compliance with customs regulations.
- Security control is the screening of passengers’ personal belongings and hand luggage.
- Checked baggage is baggage that is transported by the carrier’s liability. The carrier provides baggage check on checked baggage, which is part of the ticket and baggage identification tag for each piece of luggage. Checked baggage is carried in the luggage compartment.
- Hand baggage is baggage, which the passenger takes with him on board of a passenger vehicle without passing in the luggage compartment.
- Duty free is a system of free trade zones in international airports, seaports and on passenger crafts (air and sea).
- Slot is the place in the aircraft, which is given to the passenger according to his boarding pass.
Also, students will be given an opportunity to speak about the most popular movies, they have seen about travelling by the aircraft and the things they consider as useful as well as stupid ones.
There are so many situations related to the travel by plane, which can be considered during the lesson, but it is impossible to cover each issue. One of the most important, which should be discussed at least a little is about the health. That’s why students are given the list, which should be put in correct order:
- Do not drink alcohol the day before and during the flight.
- Bring snacks.
- Consult your therapist for suffering from any chronic disease.
- Take the appropriate vitamins.
- Consider purchasing travel insurance.
- Wear comfortable shoes that fit to walk long distances.
- Ask your therapist, are you subject to some infectious diseases.
One of the correct lists can be the following: 4, 5, 3, 7, 1, 6 and 2.
Closure:
The teacher will ask students what they have learnt from this lesson.
