The human body still amazes me every time I encounter new things. When I was younger, I did not care of how my body in its smallest parts can react. What was important then was I eat whenever I am hungry. I drink water when I feel thirsty. I seek for a good past time when I get bored. I was never interested as to why was I feeling those things? Reading “Physiological and Neurological Needs” enlightened me on what is going on inside me that triggers what I feel.
I was hooked with the part of the reading material that explains the feeling of thirst, hunger and sexual arousal. It explained homeostasis as a balanced physiological state. In this state, a person feels sated because nothing exceeds or lacking in his system. Once the balance is broken, the human body reacts through the occurrence of the feelings of need. These feelings of need instruct a person to fulfill it so that the body returns to its balanced state.
For example, when the body decreases calories even by small amount, the person feels hungry. I myself always crave for fast foods when I am in the middle of a writing assignment. However, I realized that I always exceed the needed amount of calories. Even during proper meal time, I always consume more calories than needed. A person should stop eating once he feels sated as it says in the material. In my case however, I would still pick something fill my unnecessary cravings. I would always end up desperately trying to burn calories.
Further, I thought men and women are similar in terms of sexual needs. Men for example are sexually attracted to the opposite sex with the basis of physiology and psychology while women sexual desire is closely related to relationship intimacy. Personally, this difference explains that relationships based only on sexual urges are unfair to women. It is because a woman cannot be sexually aroused without developing the emotional attachment.
