The beginning of one amazing thing starts in passport and visa office in U.S where seven people were waiting to secure their flights to India. All over sudden, an earthquake occurred and all of them were trapped inside the building. Consequently, some of them were injured while some were still alright.
One cannot imagine that Uma one of the youngest people in the crowed after Lily, could come up with a suggestion of story telling. Uma suggested that they tell stories which made them to forget a bout the danger they were in and felt a sense of togetherness. One could despise Uma because she was young but she made a different in this particular scenario.
Among these nine people, there was misjudgment a cording to the appearances of each individual. For instance Cameron who is one of the characters had a black skin. This made the other characters to judge him of being violent which was not true in the real case. Instead, when the earthquake occurred, Cameron took control of the situation by treating injuries, keeping people calm and trying to find ways for survival. Tariq had unkempt beard which make others to judge him unfairly that he was a terrorist. All these accusations were based on physical appearance rather than characters.
It is also worth noting that these nine people were in extreme danger and under normal circumstances, no one could accept to narrate any story instead, everyone could look for a way to save his or herself from the danger. The suggestion by Uma that they narrate stories a bout one amazing thing kept them occupied and also brought much hope and change among them. Therefore just mare stories kept these desperate peoples’ hopes a live until the rescue team a rived.
Even from the next narrator Mr. Pritchett talked a bout how he was abandoned when he was still very young. This made him to miss his mother so much but he was too busy to look for her. He was struggling every day to cater for his daily bread. But outwardly, Mr. Pritchett looked composed and organized.
One Amazing Thing left the readers with a lot of suspense without a conclusion. Readers are left pondering whether the survivors were rescued or not. Having that in mind, some readers could judge from the volume of the book being small that is a round couple of hundred pages that some stories were rushed through. But upon reading the book, it came out that the book is more thorough and the text is a fascinating one.
What started as a casual affair just whish was meant to keep them occupied turned to be an important affair. This was depicted when Cameron kept his last dose of his inhaler to use when his turn for the story reaches. Mrs. Pritchett also took her pills in order to be perfect while she would be telling her story. Uma became anxious that her story could remain unheard following the tremor which threatened to bring down the building. Here, each character opened up his or her mind to come into terms with the secrets of one’s life. This shows that if in any case one of them looked down upon the story telling idea by Uma, it turned out to be very important affair. Because of the tales, the survivors stay put feeling warm and become one as a family.
Even if she was the youngest in the group, Lily too gave out her story. She did not go out of the topic she was talking about. She remained relevant and composed rather than shying a way. This shows that she also contributed in making people forget a bout the looming danger and feel sense of togetherness.
Cameron wanted to get himself into a good university in order to study medicine. He was a black man with high ambitions and also committed to truth. Obviously, the right people who could help him realize his ambition were his teacher together with his mentor. But as the story unfolds, these two people really disappointed him. These people decided to burry his hopes basing the argument on his poor background. This was quite an ironical since one could judge Cameron’s teacher and his mentor as the best people to help him but this was opposite. Cameron was so mad at this incidence as it could be seen when he got out of his counselor’s office but he decided to cool down.
Another scenario is a bout Tariq whose family suffered victims of unjustified suspicion. Tariq’s family was Muslims in America. Therefore, they were being judged already as being terrorists just from their outlooks. This was evident when Tariq’s father who had a flourishing business together with his assistant manager were one day arrested and subjected to vigorous questioning. They were detained for several days and when they returned, Tariq’s father was very frustrated and became antisocial. Out of this, he suffered a stroke and later on became incapacitated. It was not a true story that really cost Tariq’s family and Tariq was disappointed with the country he was born. He was an American but he got himself thrown out which was discouraging simply because of misconception.
In conclusion, the nine survivors of the earthquake narrated different stories which clearly justified that the novel ‘One Amazing Thing’ depicts the theme of misconception as far as the identity is concerned. After reading the novel, it comes out clearly that no one should be judged on the basis of his or appearance. Every one here before the stories could be judged somehow very far a way from whatever they are in the real sense. Malathi and Mr. Manglam, two visa officers also had their own problems. They were described as being on the verge of an adulterous affair. This in the real sense could not be realized before they narrated the stories. Finally, even by merely reading the title of the book ‘One Amazing Thing’ shows that the book contains something humorous. But on reading the content, it talks a bout earthquake which is a national disaster. Therefore it requires one to actually read the book in order to come up with a decision a bout it.
