Technology is embedded in our lives as if it is born along with us. I can forget food and water while using cellphones, computers, or while watching television, but I don’t forget to see if I received any new messages, videos or emails. I would rather get sedated and sleep off the whole day and night if I am asked to be away from using these electronic devices. I also feel that our mind is constantly running and getting stressed out because of the abundant information that is fed into it on a daily basis. So, I decided to detach myself from the cellphones, computers, and television for a day.
A couple of days back I got this opportunity to be free from technology. The previous night I was about to set the alarm on my cellphone to wake me up the next day and that’s when I realized that the next day was a “technology free” day. I asked my grandmother to wake me up as she usually wakes up at 5.00am. As soon as I wake up I have a tendency to listen to rock music and I was about to turn on the music player, but then I become conscious that even music player is a kind of technology. It was hard to avoid technology because I have been using it knowingly or unknowingly. I avoided the music player and sensed a pride for rejecting it.
I had only two classes on that day and sufficient free time. I usually watch videos or surf the internet, or check mails in my free time. I consciously controlled the desire of checking my mail as I did not want to switch on my cellphone, or the notebook. I went to the kitchen and helped my mom in cutting the vegetables and cleaning the racks. The previous day we had a dance competition in our college and our group lost the first place by just 5 points, and all the while I was wondering what my friends would be discussing on the social networking site about this loss. I had my breakfast and I still had 20 minutes to leave to college, and every day in these 20 minutes I call my friends to check if there are any pending assignments. However, on that day I did not want to use my cellphone, so I polished my shoes, and arranged the shoe rack, went to the small garden in front of my house and read the newspaper. My behavior seemed strange to my family members, and as expected they asked me “Are you okay”?
I answered them with a smile, and that day I went to school by walk. I normally drive the car to college though it is only 3 miles away from home, but I wanted to avoid it as cars are also a form of technology. While I go on a walk I carry my iPod to listen to music, but on “technology free” day I kept it at home as I had planned earlier that I would walk to college, and I enjoyed the scenic beauty, chirping of birds and the sun rays falling directly on me. If I had the cellphone I play games on it during the free hours in college, but on this day I went ahead and joined my juniors who were playing football. During the game I realized that I was getting tired too soon by working out my muscles. I could only blame the cellphone games to which I am addicted due to which I did not spare time for any physical activities. In the next 15 minutes I had to rush to the class that was on 5th floor. I could have taken the lift, but I took the stairs just to avoid the lift as it is also a technology that helps us move up and down vertically in minutes.
After the classes I went home and cleaned my room rather than watching my favorite shows on television. I was curious to turn on my cellphone and notebook to check the number of missed calls, messages and emails; however, I was tired playing the football game. I applied muscle relaxant cream on my thighs and slept off with satisfaction for not using any kind of technology for the whole day. Being born in the technology era it is bit difficult for me to be completely away from technology. I was glad to connect with the nature for a day, and it would be great if we start controlling the technology, instead the technology controlling us.
