Hormone replacement therapy is spoken in hush tones and with underserved skepticism, especially testosterone for men. This begs the question, what is the reason for unprecedented backlash regarding hormone replacement therapy, especially when using testosterone in men? The claims made seem unsubstantiated, weak and are not backed by any evidence. More precisely, they are in contravention of recent discoveries and published studies. The tragedy is that such misinformed happen in the public domain and are propagated through many different media outlets. In the interest of fairness, I ask seek to know why the media does not report on the benefits of hormone replacement therapy and the health effects of diseases like stroke, diabetes, heart attack and metabolic syndrome.
The surprising thing is that since I have been reading on the topic, there is a myriad of benefits of hormone replacement therapy compared to possible side effects. I also could not find reliable and solid research collaborating the sensational claims made by numerous media outlets. Such ostentatious claims hint towards the possibility of hormone replacement therapy causing coronary artery disease and prostate cancer, premises that have been debunked by the scientific community. These claims can be are very different from the assertions of experts. The debate on the matter from the experts’ perspective revolves around the safety of hormone replacement therapy, especially the use of testosterone in men. For instance, a physician and a nurse practitioner offered their opinion in an article called Low T. from the nurse’s perspective; testosterone therapy has very positive benefits.
On the other hand, the doctor asserted that Low T was only a cash cow for the pharmaceutical companies. It was later unearthed that the nurse was a proponent to supplements, a testament to the possible bias in her assertions. The debates in different media outlets signify the misconceptions that surround the topic of hormone replacement therapy. One of the major misconceptions is that testosterone therapy not only predisposes on to, but also causes coronary artery disease and prostate cancer. As has been espoused earlier, these flamboyant claims are not only baseless but are also not backed by any scientific studies. I may not be a scientist but I have a story to tell regarding this matter. This involves a personal experience. I am forty three years of age and a former bodybuilder.
During my career as a bodybuilder, I have never seen the need to use steroids. I live a relatively clean life with my supportive wife and wonderful children. I do not feel comfortable taking medication, even painkillers. At the age of forty one years, I started experiencing some changes. These changes included chronic joint pains, a blurry vision, high blood pressure, chronic insomnia and elevated triglycerides. The symptoms did not subside for a while. Therefore, I decided to visit a physician and have a battery of tests done so that I could know my problem. The tests showed that my number was 370 based on a scale of 348 to 1100. This was on the lower side of the normal range.
Nonetheless, the doctor prescribed a low dose while monitoring my progress over a period of three months. Within the first month, most of the aforementioned symptoms subsided. The high blood pressure subsided, the joint pains ceased and my vision was no longer blurry. I am no longer on the aleve and ambien, the medication for joint pains and insomnia. For the longest time, I never had issues with low libido, I had an athletic physique and heavy lifting in the gym was not my problem. It never occurred to me that I had a problem that hormone replacement therapy using testosterone could solve.
