Introduction
The primary goal of any surgery is to prevent infections to the patients. It is thus important for medical personnel to ensure the operating room is sterile and clear of any micro-organisms (Couture et al., 14). This paper will briefly discuss principle of aseptic and sterile techniques. The paper relate the practices of these principle with the movie, scrubs season one.
As mentioned earlier, maintaining a sterile environment in the operating room is the main priority for surgeons. This is important because any activities relating to aseptic and aseptic techniques have a direct effect on the success of the surgical team. The first principle of aseptic technique requires scrubbed people to operate in a sterile environment. Scrubbed here refers to sterile personnel who work directly to the patient, while non-sterile members assist the scrubbed members with periphery duties. This principle is however not followed in some scenes from scrub season. For instance, Robert Mancio interacts with other staff in the operating room thereby posing a risk for the patient because of mixing a sterile and non-sterile environment.
The second principle requires the surgical team to use sterile drapes to create a sterile environment. These drapes create an aseptic barrier and hence reduce the passage of microorganisms. This principle is also flawed in scrubs because there are some scenes where the characters chat in the operating room and forget to place the drapes next to the patient.
The third principles stresses for the need to maintain a sterile environment for all items used in the operating room. The fourth principles stresses on the need for integrity and sterility for all items used in the sterile room. The fifth and sixth principle requires for maintenance of sterile field and the final principles requires for documentation of the sterility policies. Documentation of the policies will enable easy access to the concerned persons.
