This is a surgical operation in which a damaged or failing organ in human is removed and substituted with a functioning organ. The organ donated may be from a living or deceased donor. For these organs to match, certain tests must be conducted to evaluate donors i.e. the blood type, HLA testing, and cross-match. The first test in the process of living donation process is the blood test as it determines the compatibility of a match to the recipient (Gan, et al. 775).
The organ transplant process consists of several steps. However, the steps are similar no matter the type of transplant one is to undertake. Firstly, the donor must be evaluated to find out his eligibility for a transplant. Before this is done, various tests may be recommended, and queries will be asked to help in finding out how well how fine you can handle the process of transplant (Gan, et al. 775). These might include a complete history of health and physical examination, evaluation of your emotional and physiological health, bone marrow biopsy and pulmonary function tests among others.
An intense immunosuppressive therapy regimen is normal to the post-transplant patient to prevent complications like Graft versus Host Disease. With the arrival of the modern immunosuppressive agents, graft and patient survival have improved substantially (Gan, et al. 775).
A process in which the recipient’s immune system assaults the transplanted tissue/organ is known as transplant rejection. Since the body’s immune system typically protects it from elements that may be harmful like poisons and germs (Barshick, 68).when an individual receives an organ from another person during transplant surgery, his immune system may identify this as a foreign body.
Lastly, the organ transplant technology has both positive and adverse effects, in my opinion, i.e. when I happen to be the recipient, I will positively gain as its success will mean that I will once again leave a healthy life with proper organ functionality. However, when I happen to be the donor, I will miss my body part for a lifetime, and that makes it an awkward encounter in life even though it might be necessary for the sake of one’s life.
