Organizational identification can be defined as the significance of the organization in the individual’s self-concept. It is the adoption of identity by either the person in the context or by others. Organizations regulate and control members’ identity in different ways. One of this way is by conceive control where members watch and control each other’s actions. Another way through which organization regulate and control members’ identity is by setting up some rules and procedures to govern the identification. Also, member’s identity can be regulated through the setting up of strong organizational values. Organization identification is a legitimate organizational concern. This is because it affects the attitude and the output of employees at work. Organization identification also gives the employees a sense of self-identity, and links the employees with other organizational behavior concerning leadership and understanding the meaning of work.
Private/public split came in the wake of the middle class, housekeeping and baby-sitting were seen as the duties of a mother and a wife. Such ideas persisted during that era and still do presently breaking up homes. Men-women split has brought a number of problems in the society. The common problem that results from this split is family break ups and domestic quarrels. Cases of women and men fighting are as a result of this split. Increased number of street families, gender biases and discrimination spring up from the social split between men and women.
Gender differences exist up to date with many cases getting publicity. Women are viewed as inferior to men, and, therefore, cannot manage to perform some duties. House-keeping and childcare duties are viewed as women responsibility in most of the countries. Tough and difficult duties are left for men, this notion within the society continues to widen the gap between the two genders.
Gender identities are performed in everyday life, personally am encountered with gender performances while performing the daily chores within the homestead. The only useful performances are those that are not gender discriminatively, and performed by anybody irrespective of their gender. They create an opportunity for interaction between the two genders and a chance to perform duties jointly. Problematic aspects of these duties are that some of them are tiresome yet one cannot get help since they are assigned to a particular gender. By engaging in different chores without claiming that they are meant for the opposite gender.
The notion that masculine workers are the ideal workers does not hold in all organizational contexts. This idea has been challenged in most of the organization by looking at the performance of both genders. Studies have shown that even the feminine are as good as men at work.
Cultural knowledge acquired from the society, metaphors, and stories shape our behaviors and understanding of issues. These cultural tools depict the two genders as having different roles in the society. Important strategies to combat these gender identities are performing any duties that assigned without the notion that some are meant for a particular gender. Another strategy is assigning duties indiscriminative of their gender this will help intersect the identities. The concepts in this chapter equip one with the necessary knowledge about the two genders. These concepts rule out any gender differences and equip one with the necessary ideas and knowledge on how to deal with gender identities.
