Introduction
Managers employ different approaches that are used to steer the direction of the organization to ensure efficiency and effectiveness. The paper will discuss the various strategies that are used by managers to run the organizational operations. These management practices are unique to each organization. Also, they help an organization to gain a competitive edge in the market. The management team of the Thomas Jefferson University Hospital has implemented various strategies that ensure it becomes one of the most preferred hospitals in the region. The hospital is located in the centre city of Philadelphia, in the United States of America. Robert Cindrich is a member of the management team at the health institution. He is the Interim General Counsel at the institution.
General Background and Responsibilities
The institution has been in existence since the year 1825, when the CEO, Thomas Jefferson, first founded it. The hospital is a non-profit organization and currently has 957 beds. The success of the organization is owed to the managerial strategies that are employed by the management team in executing their operations. The management has developed strategies over its lifetime, ensuring improved and sustainable management models. The institution has moved forward to have a health university where they mentor health students and has a health centre. By providing practicum based information and management approaches the institution has ensured the best outputs within the industry. The strategy has provided quality and above normal outputs. In addition, it has ensured unrivalled outputs
Managing Employees
Managers should be skilled enough to ensure that they can control the actions of their employees. The managers need to properly coordinate employee needs with their expectations hence motivating workers. Failure to balance the needs of employees and those of the management may lead to revolutions and sabotage of key organizational objectivs. Robert Cindrich has employed various employee motivational techniques that ensure the employees are always motivated to work for the company. He has incorporated the use of employee appraisal techniques. Using this strategy, the employees are rewarded for the hard work they do while working for the organization. Employees are rewarded for the effort they put into the organization. For example, those that work over time to compensate for their addition time sacrifice. This ensures that employees are always willing to work for long periods regardless of the time they will spend in the workplace (Paarlberg & Lavigna, 2010).
Robert also employed other ways in which he motivates the employees to work hard for the organizations. While conducting his day-to-day activities, he interacts with the employees and works to lead them in the right direction. Employees need a sense of leadership and guidance from their leaders. The manager ensures that he greets the employees by name every morning. This creates a personal relationship between him and the employees. With this kind of relationship, the employees will be motivated to work hard for the company because they will feel unique to the enterprise. This creates a healthy working environment for the employees within the organization. This relationship can be developed through meetings in the morning. These meetings help the employees to discuss the events that took place on the previous day and also discuss what to look forward to in the coming day (Plantinga, Plantenga & Siegers, 2010). Also, these meetings help to set the agenda for the rest of the day.
The manager believed that his techniques made the employees work harder than expected, as they were motivated to do so. This relationship is vital to ensuring continued company growth and progress. The primary objective of the manager is to ensure the organization achieves its goals and objectives. Employee motivation plays a vital role in the development of the organization. Robert seemed to understand this concept. During the meetings that are held in the morning, the manager addresses any concerns the employees might have. He believed that this would help in clearing the minds of the employees before the day begun. Ultimately, this would enable them to work well throughout the day. Free minds will allow employees to work well during the day and provide more input towards the growth of the organization. When the employees are happy, the customers and patients will also be happy. Happy employees will spread their joy to those around them. The patients will also witness this behaviour and begin to acknowledge the good treatment they received while being served at the institution.
Proper treatment will cause the clients to give good reports about the organization. As a result, the organization will become one of the most preferred health institutions in the region. This is in line with the organizational goals and objectives that have been set aside by the organizational management during the inception (Köszegi, 2006). Realizing these objectives will be a clear indication that the institution is headed in the right direction. The manager is also readily available to the employees on demand. In case any of the employees needs to speak to the manager for any reason, his door was always open to them. This made the employees feel special and cared for. This is one of the many motivational strategies that have been employed by the manager. Robert is a counsellor, which puts him in his comfort shoes. Employees are human beings just like anyone else and should be treated like so. The employees are free to visit the office of the manager at their convenience and seek any form of clarification they may require. At the same time, the manager is also trying to teach the employees on how to become independent.
The manager has strived to ensure the employees are well motivated to execute their daily duties. Another strategy he has employed is the use the company’s records. The manager has made sure that the employees are well aware of the organization’s status. This may at times require him to open the financial records of the company to the employees. This way, the employees are well aware of the company’s financial records. This way, they will be in a position to assess that they are compensated appropriately with regards to the organization’s financial status. The manager takes employee motivation very seriously. This is because of all the strategies that have been implemented by the manager to ensure that the operations of the organization are run smoothly. The manager has realized that the company cannot function without the employees. Therefore, the employees play an integral part in the progress of the enterprise. It takes high skills to acknowledge the role played by the employees. The manager has taken all the necessary steps to ensure that the operations of the organization are executed smoothly (Donaghey et al, 2011).
Recently, the manager introduced an award system that would work for the benefit of the employees. Outstanding employees would be recognized, and they would be announced monthly, through the various communication forums within the company. Also, the same outstanding employees would have a wooden portrait of themselves mounted on the wall in common areas. Employees strived to outdo each other because they wanted that kind of recognition for themselves. This recognition means that they are well motivated to work for the company. Human beings love to be recognized for the good deeds they do. For this reason, the manager and not just workers who are meant to be used treat employees as human beings.
Conclusion
Through the interview exercise, I learned a few things. The interview taught me that employee motivation is vital to improving the company status. Employees form an integral part of the organization and should be treated as such. Employee motivation can be executed through various ways. The manager treated the employees as if they were his children. This created a good working relationship between him and the employees (Santora & Esposito, 2010). Ultimately, this further facilitated the success of the organization among its competitors. The success of the organization is crucial to any manager, and they strive to ensure that all operations are executed for the organization. Also, I learned the various techniques that can be used to motivate the employees in the workplace. The manager at the hospital was a real leader, through his actions and the tasks he undertook for the employees.
