- This article provides a discussion of how the former Dallas Cowboys coach Tom Landry applied concepts of industrial engineering such as quality control, computer analysis and industry psychology to develop a program, which improved the team’s performance and achieve multiple successes winning the Super bowl.

- The use of quality control in the football game is depicted in the same way as quality control in the manufacturing facility. Since the success of a firm depends on the quality of its products, it is the duty of the manager to ensure that the products made by the company are of high quality. The same case applies in football. The players are the organization’s products and if they are prepared well, quality will be achieved, and this translates to success. Therefore, a core principle of quality control utilized to improve the quality of players was regular checking of the progress made by the players. The implementation of the quality control program allowed the team coaches of the Dallas cowboys to be able to analyze each aspect of the game after every week of playing. This allowed weak areas of play to be discovered. A quality control coach was hired to analyze such information on a regular or weekly basis. Another strategy employed by Landry was the use of industrial psychology. An industrial psychologist was hired to aid the coaching staffs to better manage the team and assist them in developing strong philosophies for the team. Thus, there were the development of overall team goals, defensive goals, the offensive goals, and the individual goals. The third approach implemented by Landry was the use of computers and recruiters. Computer analysis was implemented in the recruiting process of the players. This aided the team to recruit the best players. Statistics were compiled for a period of four years for different promising players and questionnaires developed to evaluate the players based on the data collected.
- Based on the different strategies that have been discussed, it is quite clear that different aspects of different fields can be employed to help or provide new organizational strategies, which can be used to increase the team performance hence guarantee team success. Computer analysis allow for more and easier comparison when it comes to the selection of different players. Unlike when using recruiters only, selection of the best players is made possible using computers. New programs continue to be developed, which the different football teams can use to improve or obtain the best players. Industrial psychology offers a form of training to managers, which allows them to better train and coach players to reach their potential. Furthermore, a constant review of the quality control program is essential to ensure that each player is awe of what is required of him if the organization is to be a success. All this approaches combine contribute to team improvement, which translates to more wins and, therefore, more games, which means the organization has profits in terms of TV rights games and a larger fan base who attend the games.
- This article has allowed me to learn that different approaches can be employed in an organization for the first time, and if the correct professionals are employed, successful implementation is highly guaranteed.
