Media Policy Analysis
Introduction
BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is one of the leading national media groups in the United Kingdom and it operates under the Royal Charter. BBC was considered to be the most watched news channel in the country until 2005. Later on, ITV Plc became fully operational and grabbed a major place in media industry and stock exchange of the country. BBC is considered as one of the largest media groups in the world and it offers a wide range of services and channels for its both domestic and international viewers.
Analysis of Group
BBC published a new strategy for its viewers “Putting Quality First” in 2010. The company provides news in many languages and its website is also available in translation with different languages in order to cater the increasing demand of its diversified readers with different ethnic backgrounds. The other major competitor ITV Plc, however, offers a wide range of services but is unable to attain the quality of services offered by BBC . Advertising and endorsement has become the major source of finance for media groups. BBC provides free advertising online; whereas, ITV is a commercial media group and is unable to get this competency .
Nowadays, Internet has lowered the cost of broadcasting. The new civil society is emerging on the internet webs and BBC has emerged as a leading news agency with increasing internet audience all over the world. BBC gets most of its revenue from the license fee from within UK. This provides the company an edge over other competitors and it provides advertising services on economical costs as compared to other media groups .
Conclusion
The media groups mostly depend on the domestic funding sources; therefore, national channels have an edge on the commercial channels as they have a secure source of financing in the country in which they operate.
