This video is about irrationality of people’s behavior with life examples. The first example is a story about nurses, who trust their intuition and in fact hurts patients during their actions. The nurses in the burn department belief that rip bandage off quickly with short duration but high intensity is better, than doint this task more slowly but not so painful. When Dan tried to convince them that the second way is better, they said that they knew themselves the best course of actions. Later, he experimented about people’s pain perception and found out that nurses were wrong and durable pain is perceived by people better than high intensity pain.
The second example was about cheat. When people determine whether to cheat, their decisions are not based on the economic rational subjects: gain from cheat, probability of being caught. Actually, people can cheat a little rates, so that they will feel them comfortable and won’t worsen their impression about themselves. This is called personal fudge factor. Fudge factor is decreased by honor codes, like Commendments of Bible. People who thought about Commendments cheat less, than others.
Fudge factor is increased by “distance” from money. For instance, if there are Cola bottles in the fridge, people easily can take someone else’s Cola. However, all of us will feel uncomfortable in case of taking someone’s money, even small quantities. The same principle can be applied to stock markets, where people operate with money replacers.
Another factor, that influences cheat rates, is other people’s behavior. And there is peculiriarity that the probability that we cheat is higher if we see other members of our group cheat. The fact of cheating by members of other groups influence our behavior less. It was demonstrated by example with student actor, who worn both T-shirts of testees’ university and other university.
In conclusion, it is important to take into account behavioral aspects, not only rational ones during different situations analysis.
