Auto Repair Technology
Some newer cars have technologically advanced computing systems that enhance the cars in various ways. These automated systems generate electronic error codes when there’s something wrong with the vehicle. The automobile companies give car dealers access to the machines that read these error codes. Independent auto mechanics may not have access to these machines, and therefore, cannot fix these new cars.
Some people, especially the independent mechanics, feel that this system is not fair because it prevents some people from being able to repair the car. Customers might argue that limiting the number of repair shops keeps them from being able to choose their own mechanic (Frost, 2014).
The auto companies are just protecting their own interests. They argue that it is safer for the dealers to repair the cars that they’re specifically trained to repair, just like it’s best for the machines that are created to diagnose the problem are specifically made to aid in repairing the vehicle.
An alternative would be to allow the independent mechanics to contact the car dealerships to ask them what the codes indicate. The dealers can then give the information to the independent mechanics for free, or for a small fee. This way the dealerships can make sure that the independent mechanics are still conforming to the cars’ environmental and safety specifications.
According to Frost (2012) this code system keeps mechanics from overriding safety features, such as airbags, or turning off the systems that keep the car safe for the environment.
