The book paranoia gives a gripping touch and fantastically intruinging imagination that keeps you glued to the end. It combines high-tech business with corporate security and espionage that thrills all through the book. Adam Cassidy is the quintessential slacker who is tired of his job at Wyatt Telecom. He diverts corporate`s funds of about $80 grand to throw a party for his fellow loading dock employee, and he fully commits to be fired for his crime.
The company`s security finally catches up with him and his boss at Wyatt, Nicholas Wyatt a rich and influential individual offers Adam a way out instead of facing charges against him labeled as embezzlement. Nicholas Wyatt wants Adam to work as spy on the Aurora project at a rival tech firm and he is assisted by the company`s chief of security, executive coach to acquire fake recommendations and a well-rehearsed interview to get into his new job at Trion.
His new boss at Trion, Jock Goddard, is impressed with Adam and starts under a ruthless, tyrannical boss Nora Summers and climbs the corporate ladder to become the CEO`s assistant. He gets a good check, drives a cool Porsche and his new found love thinks he is a dream. He is given upfront information from Wyatt and his views about the market, products and people impresses at Trion until one of Trion`s product has manufacturing issues and Adam has a novel approach of rescuing it.
The characters seem real that makes it exceptional in thrillers especially Adam Cassidy. Adam is expertly and compassionately developed, and I felt empathetic with his plight. His sick father and father`s caretaker were interesting, as was his good-time buddy Seth (“Dude, it’s never too late to have a happy childhood.”) Alana was a little more prefab than the other characters. For some reason, I got to think that the characters Jock Goddard was a replica of “Mr. Peterman,” Elaine’s boss from the television show Seinfeld.
Finally, the plot resolution was, for me, surprising. This is because of the genre I expected a formulaic ending along the lines of ‘The Firm’, or ‘Wall Street’ but that wasn’t the case. I ended up getting the Wings song ‘Band on the Run’ stuck in my head because of one scene where Adam had that song as an earworm – don’t let it happen to you.
I would recommend this book to anybody who fancies engaging, intense and intelligent thrillers.
