Parents play an important role in the development of the child beginning from the birth, and early growth stages till the child is mature. The feelings and beliefs of self, individual awareness, and self-perception develop very early in young children. Every child possesses unique characteristics that can be enhanced by paying good attention to the child. The personalities of children can be turned compatible when proper attention is paid to the children’s nature. While the child is in growing stages it is very essential that the parents communicate with the directly and try to know the likes and dislikes of the child. Too often parents use this form of communication as their primary and exclusive form of conveying information, thereby dissipating its effect (Dunning, 2004). Depending on the nature of the parents the four types of parenting styles are the Authoritarian, Authoritative, Permissive, and Uninvolved.
Authoritarian Parenting: In this style of parenting the parents control their children through punishments, strict discipline, and lay down lot of rules to follow. The children’s needs and wishes are not considered by the parents. There is lot of expectation from the child without any valid reason. The parents expect more obedience and they display less response towards their children. The child is not allowed to live according to its wishes and desires because the parent controls the behavior of the child.
Authoritative Parenting: In this style of parenting the parents are strict towards their children and also encourage healthy discussions. The parents expect their children to meet some behavioral standards and at the same time allow them to think for themselves. The parents display the responsiveness towards the children and listen to their queries. This style of parenting develops a sense of responsibility in the children and is considered to be democratic. The children are allowed to discuss freely and parents are kind towards the children.
Permissive Parenting: In this style of parenting the parents have no control on the children’s behavior and the children are permitted to do what they feel. Though the parents are involved in the children they do not demand any control on the behavior of the children. This style of parenting makes the children adamant in their wishes and needs, and they can be more imprudent. The parents are bound by passionate warmth and are unwilling to create any rules for the children to follow.
Uninvolved Parenting: In this style of parenting the parents do not indulge in any emotions of the children. They provide only the basic necessities but disengage themselves from any involvement with the children. No rules are set for the behavior of the children. The parents do not spend time and show negligence in any activity of the children.
A 10-year old child is considered to be in the beginning stages of adolescence where he or she has good mental strength, can learn any language quickly, has a sound reasoning ability and can start thinking like matured people. During midadolescence, thinking becomes more abstract, verbal abilities grow and law and morality become more important (Swanson, Edwards, & Spencer, 346). The concentration level is very high for a 10-year old child and the child can concentrate on a task for long hours. Logical thinking and a hunger to gather more information on any topic is mostly seen in the kids of this age group.
The Authoritarian parenting style on a 10-year old child will suppress the socio-emotional development and mental growth due to the strict rules and restrictions of the parents. In the Authoritative style the child may have freedom of speech, however there may also be a hesitation to put forth the ideas and thoroughly express due to certain behavioral standards set by parents. The Permissive style is considered to the best method for socio-emotional development as it allows the child to express without any boundaries and parents support in the discussion with the child. There is consistent response, comfort, and lot of care from parents that generally gives good results. If the uninvolved parenting style is applied for a 10-year old child, then the child will not have any socio-emotional development, the child will lack self-control and will be less competent then the other children.
