Coordinated management of meaning (CCM) in social sciences provides an understanding of how individuals coordinate, create and manage meanings in the communication process. In general terms, it refers to how people come with rules that are used to create and interpret meanings in the communication field. These rules and policies are enmeshed in people’s conversation where meaning is coordinated on a constant basis. In the contemporary world, people constantly communicate with others, and they normally design meaning of the messages which they used in their conversations. The meanings of the messages are based on the conversational experience of those who are engaging in conversations. The previous social realities are significant in interpreting the coordinated meanings of the messages. The communication is important because it provides an underlying process that people use to negotiate when there are conflicted meanings of the messages which might create a social problems (Miller, 2006). CCM is crucial because it fights for the meanings that can be managed in a way that is productive and that can improve the state of the interactions of the process taking place. The CCM has been found to rely majorly on management, meaning and coordination which help to explain how the social realities result from conversations.
Pearce and Cronen (1980) developed the CCM theory which explains that when two people are socially interacting, they tend to construct the meaning of the messages they use in their conversation. Their conversation also comprises of the interpersonal system that assists them to explain their reactions and actions. It has however been found that CCM is related to several theories which include the theories of Speech Act, Systems Theory, and Symbolic Interactions theory. Pearce and Cronen (1980) assumes those people who are engaging in conversations construct the social meaning that they believe are important in the situations in which they are in. People within the social situation would first like to understand what is going on in their conversation before they apply the rules to figure out the things under the conversation. Those people who are in the conversation employ rules to decide what kind of actions that are appropriate for their conversations to bring their desired meaning. Pearce and Cronen (1980) employ the aspect “making social worlds” to explain the CMM (Miller, 2006). The theory argues that people have a vision of what they think is needed for a noble good and hate or fear certain things in the environment. The theory further argues that people want to accomplish their dreams in life even if they are in conflicting situations. When the conflict is present in the CCM, logics of meaning and action is employed to explain the variability in meaning. This aspect explains that coordination is difficult when people in conversation have different views.
Pearce and Cronen argue that CCM is a rule-based theory in that constitutive rules and policies are applied to explain or interpret the meaning of messages used during the conversation process. CCM also apply regulative rules which are considered significant as they determine how an individual respond to particular messages (Pearce & Cronen, 1980). With regards to communication, CCM offers three terms that are significantly used to interpret the messages. The first term is the coordination which explains the direction of the people’s attention to the ways in which the actions come together to produce coordinated patterns (Pearce & Cronen, 2000). Coherence is another term that has been advanced by CCM. It provides an attention on the stories used in conversation and the inherent part of the meaning of such stories. CCM is significant in conversation in that it provides the social and intercultural meaning of the contents of the social conversation. Integrated reporting has been used to capture and captivate the meanings of management issues.
Furthermore, CCM has integrated the social media such as Twitter to ensure that communication is done at a faster rate. Embracing social media has touched the social reality and produced the required meaning in an appropriate manner (Pearce et.al, 2014). Currently, people use smartphones to tweet, text, email and surf. The world conference reported that the current technology is significant as it allows people to communicate, share ideas and information. The inspiration in communication has been witnessed in the recent past where social challenges in communication have been easily addressed. Technology is important in CCM because it offers a unique perspective on the future of the communicators all over the world.
According to Pearce and Cronen (1980), CCM is significant in management because the core of effective management is communication. When there is an effectively coordinated communication within an organization, management is made easy. CCM provides knowledge to the workers and in turn, managers have the ability to arrange and communicate the tasks to be executed by the employees effectively (Thomas & Mei 1988). Research shows that coordinated management provides social realities by coordinating the actions, experience, and coherence in a unified context. Pearce and Cronen see the “social world" as the world where people depend on the CCM to communicate and unearth the meaning and truth of messages in their conversation (Pearce et.al, 2014).
Pearce and Cronen (1980) came up with the coordinated meaning of management. According to this theory, two were involved interacting to socially give their meaning. They comprise of interpersonal for of system which assist them to explain their reactions as well as actions (Cronen, et.al 2006). This theory argue that persons in a certain conversation have their own social realities as compared to others. Pearce and Cronen has a belief that coordinated management meaning is a great importance in everyday lives of an individual. Some people in a social setting need to know what is going on in a given situation and put in action rules to sort out things out. These kind of people base their understandings on certain rules and decide which actions to take (Pearce & Cronen, 2000). Pearce and Cronen relates coordinated meaning of management to such a term as making social worlds. Based on this, people need to have vision and mission of what is needed, good and noble things and they also fear and hate certain things in their lives. These kind of people want to accomplish and manage things in their lives when they are in conflict with others in matters life. However, coordination is difficult in a situation that two people have different point of view.
Coordinated meaning of management is a theory of rule based. Rules such as constitutive are rules of meaning that communicators used to communicate to understand and interpret an event of communication (Thomas & Mei 1988). Moreover, regulative rules are other rules of action that determine matters respond and how to behave. In other languages, certain things are pick for attention of others and for all. Paying attention to certain events improve language in practice and writing. Coordinated management meaning offers particular terms for communication perspectives in such events and other objects of social worlds (Cronen et.al, 2006). These terms are; coherence, mystery and coordination.
Coordination helps in directing attention to the ways where actions produce terms together (Cronen et.al, 2006). These patterns constitutes objects and events of the social environment in which people live in. Events and objects in coordination suggests that they are constructed by interweaved practices of many persons. Coherence on the other hand, assist in directing attention to stories told that make lives more meaningful. This story is the main form of an inherent part of construction meaning and means a lot to be human. Coordination management meaning suggest that people involved in stories about many issues of life including collective identity, individual, and the rest of the world. Such stories creates tension between the coherent world stories and in daily life stories that coordinate with other people (Pearce & Cronen, 2000). However, coordination management meaning focuses on a powerful accounts of joy, dynamic, and frustrations of life. Moreover, mystery is a term that is used to remind people that daily existence is mere fact than more to life. Pearce and Cronen says that reducing live to mere fact is bad and will lead fail. Furthermore, mystery guides the attention in the sense that the whole universe is far much big than any other stories that can make it coherent. Nonverbal communication is of a great importance where it consists face to face communication of two or more participants from different cultures and social setting of life. Many people communicate in various ways to deliver their intended message to the final destination. Some use nonverbal communication means while others communicate verbally with their parties.
In conclusion, this essay presents data obtained from a qualitative study of Pearce and Cronen basing their discussion and arguments on coordination meaning of management in matters communication (Pearce & Cronen, 2000). Communication have the implications in defining and giving meaning, role and function of coordination management. Some of these issues are discussed in this excerpt.
