There are many unique and exciting opportunities in life, but they do not always lead us down the path that is best for us. Since achieving my Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, I have been considering the multitude of different avenues available for higher education in the business and finance world, and through my research, I became aware of Pepperdine University’s Graziadio School of Business, and the associated finance and business Master’s programs.
I am pursuing a career in consulting or wealth management, with the intention of combining my personal multicultural background with my knowledge of the financial industry on a global scale. My cultural identity as a Chinese person has only been enriched by my time in the United States; my time and education in the United States has been invaluable to me, and I believe it will continue to serve me well as I grow professionally and academically. I have been doing internship-based work at a number of different businesses and finance hubs for some time now (including Morgan Stanley and CITIC Trust Co, LTD.), and these internship positions have allowed me the opportunity to use my language skills and cultural knowledge to glean a better understanding of the international business and finance industry.
Coming to the United States as an adolescent has changed me in ways that I could not have foreseen when my family and I made the decision for me to leave China and study in the United States. The cultural differences between the two countries were vast, but I persevered through the difficulties of the language barrier and the cultural differences. The difficulties I faced when I moved from China have made me simultaneously more self-reliant and more willing to work well in a team; I have learned the benefits of asking for help and for taking responsibility for my own successes. This focus on teamwork and personal responsibility has served me extremely well during my time in the United States, and I believe it will continue to serve me well as I pursue my higher education goals in Business and Finance.
The Graziadio School of Business offers its students a rigorous academic program that focuses on readying them for a complex, team-oriented, competitive environment; I believe I can thrive in such an environment, and bring a slightly different cultural point-of-view to the already-diverse group of students. In addition, the teaching faculty there has outstanding experience in real-life business environment, which is a rare chance for me to learn about real business cases and experiences-- many of which are likely to be what I have to face in future work situations. In addition to the academic and theoretical lessons that this program can impart on me, I can learn from and absorb the experience of predecessors to develop and improve qualities in various aspects for the preparation of entry into workplace.
The Graziadio School of Business MAF program attaches great significance to teaching financial know-how and cultivating applied skills, which is helpful for strengthening abilities in both aspects. As I intend to enroll in a program that provides a CFA track for its students, I have come to believe strongly that the Pepperdine University M.S. program will be an excellent fit for my personal goals and dreams. This program will also give me the opportunity to associate with some of the top minds in the business world, allowing me to glean insights from their experiences, mistakes, and successes.
