Though this chapter may seem very technical at first glance, going over it again I realized that the concepts discussed in it are actually very practical. Nowadays, it cannot be denied that the society has developed a strong culture of consumerism. Corporations have found and established an easy way to promote their products, and instill this value of consumerism to people, thanks to the help of technology. Regardless of whether it is a necessity or just plain leisure, the cost of living in most parts of the world has definitely increased. Though this is the case, it cannot be immediately determined as to whether the standard of living of citizens in these parts of the world also did increase.
Going over the lesson, I have had several realizations and questions. One of my realizations is that, populations can be a relative factor in the increase of human consumption. The more the population of a country increases, the more is the increase in its consumption. Another is that, extreme inequality really exists in the world, and this is manifested on how countries are categorized as either developed, developing, and underdeveloped. The income of most people living in developed countries are usually more than enough to satisfy their needs, while many people in developing and underdeveloped countries are living under the poverty threshold. There are many factors and elements that has influenced this. One of which is the policies administered by governments. It is a fact that this has a strong influence on the lives of the citizens of a country. Which lead me to this question: Is the government of developing and underdeveloped countries mainly responsible for the inability of its citizens to improve their standards of living? Or is it the sole responsibility of the citizens to do so?
