What would you do to raise your children to be well-adjusted physically and emotionally?
Although factors such as technological advancement and consumerism make raising children a difficult task in today’s society, we can ensure our children overcome the setbacks and become well-adjusted.
Parents should value and reassure the child through the milestones and struggles. The child grows up knowing he/she is loved, valued, and raised by people he/she can depend on. The recognition of strengths and support to improve on weak areas builds self-esteem, confidence, persistence, courage, and other attributes that help the child face and overcome challenges. Through guidance, the child grows up to understand emotions, how to express and respond to them appropriately.
How would you handle the attraction of technology in your household?
Parents can encourage and engage children in enjoyable games and physical activities such as baseball and bicycle riding. It minimizes the negative impact of technology by reducing the amount of time children spend with it (Rowan, 2013). Rules must be established to moderate technology use without discouraging its positive impact. For instance, forbidding the use of phones at the dinner table allows the parents and children to talk about their day and connect. It may be difficult to follow through but with maximum effort, the children can adapt to the changes and benefit in various aspects of their development.
In conclusion, there is no perfect way of raising a child. Through commitment, communication, and flexibility, parents can help their children to cope with and overcome today’s challenges. It will not only boost the child’s self-esteem but also foster the development of important life skills.
