Convergence of media refers to the interlinking of information technologies, media content and communication networks that have emerged due to the evolution of the internet. In the 1990s, there were radios, cell phones, computers and television sets. Each of these products carried out a particular task (Dal Yong Jin 51). In essence, the mobile phone was used for receiving and making calls, the internet utilized for searching information on the web, the radio for listening to music, and the television for watching movies. In the present days, convergence of technology has led to the development of various multipurpose gadgets. For instance, a smartphone can be used to make calls, search the web, watch television shows and listening to music among other tasks. An iPad allows users to watch Television, search the web, watch movies and perform other computer-like tasks. Even desktop computers and laptops are now able to make phone calls and allow video chatting. Convergence of the television with the internet has allowed users of the web to watch Television shows and stream movies online via websites for example Netflix.
The convergence of Television and the Internet has personally made my daily life easier. It has allowed me to access favorite Television shows and movies more conveniently, quickly and efficiently. It has allowed people to do business regularly, quickly and more effectively. Through the convergence, colleagues and friends can connect to each other quickly.
However, the convergence has raised issues in the society. The constant access to media, information, and the web has proved dangerous especially where people become addicted. It is evident that currently, most people are addicted to looking at their emails, Instagram, Facebook, Twitter and other interesting social sites. This addictive habit have integrated into people’s lifestyle that most are unable to function without these gadgets. The practice is detrimental as it has led to the development of antisocial habits. For instance, they have reduced people’s face to face interaction time as each person is busy with his or her gadget (Dal Yong Jin 53).
