An expert system is a computer system which has the ability to act as a human being in giving thoughts to assist in problem-solving. It has a predefined set of knowledge that is vital for decision making aimed at handling pressing issues in various disciplines. The users of the systems are enjoying increased efficiency in executing their tasks following the use of expert systems. This is to mean that it has various applications which are discussed below.
Financial Services
Many companies in the world have focused on the use of expert systems in making financial decisions. Financial services have increased in complexity thus requiring computer applications to offer assistance. It is in this change that many companies today apply expert systems in financial decision making. For instance, bankers use these systems to offer advisory services on whether to offer money in terms of loans to individuals and businesses. Sometimes it becomes very hard to have a clear understanding of client’s credit worthiness. However, the use of programs such as expert systems offers a solution to such problems. Besides, insurance companies also use these programs to analyze customer’s risk thus able to have a clear picture of the value for the insurance (Lin, n.d).
Furthermore, investors currently are using these applications to help them determine whether to invest in a certain business or not depending on the risks associated and returns expected. Upon suggesting the business and the capital involved the expert systems can assist the investor to make such a decision. On the other hand, the systems also provide companies with information and data about financial market performance. Such data and the information are very key in assisting organizations in investing stock to increasing their returns.
Designing and Manufacturing
Designing is a very demanding and complex process of manufacturing which when not monitored may lead to company’s inefficiency. Many Operation Engineers find many difficulties in planning their designs. However, experts systems have become common tools for helping organizations in designing and manufacturing processes. For instance, the application assists manufacturing companies in laying out their factory and all other steps involved in designing a factory. Lin (n.d) acknowledges that expert systems are currently assisting individuals and organizations to promote succeed in their processes.
Troubleshooting and Diagnosing devices
The advancement in technology has seen the development of sophisticated devices such as vehicles, computers, and smartphones among many others. All these devices use programs that are subject to failure sometimes. This is the reason as to why many users of these devices have focused on the use of expert systems to assist them in troubleshooting them in the event of failure. Many of these devices develop problems that hindering the users from executing their tasks as planned. Sometimes it becomes very hard for the users to identify the area where the problem emanates and thus unable to make any correction. However, expert systems take that initiative of helping the users to identify such areas.
Engineered systems are a good example of areas where expert systems have been used to identify and correct problems leading to their failure to function. An outstanding example of the application in engineering is the diagnosis of a car engine when it develops a problem and the mechanic is unable to identify such a problem. Besides; the same technology is also widely used in medical diagnosis. The systems play a great role in providing doctors with medical information that assists them in diagnosing complex illnesses. In all these applications, expert systems act as a problem identifier and solver at the same time.
Monitoring and Control of processes
Organizational processes require close supervision and follow-up to ensure that they proceed as planned. Advancement in technology has led to increased complexity in the organizational operational process thus calling for expertise in monitoring and control of the processes. As a result, organizations today are using expert systems to identify anomalies in operational processes and suggest best ways of handling them before they cause problems in the process. Besides, the application systems assist in repairing processes in case the planned is not achieved (Lin, n.d).
Planning and Scheduling
Planning of processes by organization remains a key problem despite good decision making by the members of the organization. As a result, many organizations are currently using expert systems in events where planning seem to be complex. The knowledge-based systems play a role in analyzing the set goals and helping in determining a course of action to assist the organization to attain the planned goals. In so doing, it becomes easier for the organizations to pursue their goals without much trouble. An outstanding example of the areas where expert systems assist in planning and scheduling is in the airline industry. Therefore the systems identify and develop a plan of action to help in executing a given task.
Knowledge publishing
Knowledge publishing is a new discipline in which expert play a role in providing knowledge for handling diverse problems. Under this new discipline, the expert systems are widely used in identifying the underlying situation and offering solutions. The application is tailored in a way such that it can fit in the user’s problem context. For instance, expert systems are applied as a tax advisor in which it provides tax departments with advice on best tax strategies to apply as well as assisting in generating a viable tax policy. Secondly, the applications are also in correcting grammatical mistakes in a given text which is becoming increasingly important for students and scholars.
In conclusion, it is clear that expert systems are applicable in a wide spectrum of activities giving human beings an added advantage to solve complicated problems and enhance efficiency. In the commonly used devices, the systems remain vital in assisting the users in tracking the working, identifying and correcting any malfunctioning of the devices. Besides, it is applicable in many processes from the first step of planning all the way to monitoring and control. As a result, it plays a great role in enhancing the success of any process to which it is applied.
