For the past 13 weeks, I have been working on my vocal instruments through this course. I have been introduced to efficient singing mechanisms that have been very helpful in the building of my vocal instruments. The focus has been strengthening and development of my voice so that I can methodically approach various challenges that are involved in the exercises and the songs. Through the course, I have been able to work on the discovery of my optimal voice despite the fact that I had very little singing experience at the start of the course. I have also worked on my ability to present sung material, which is a skill that I never had at the start of the course but I feel that currently, my presentation skills are at a higher level. Furthermore, I have been able to work on the use of voice in the presentation of human emotions on the stage.
In the building of my vocal instruments, I was introduced to an assortment of healthy and efficient singing mechanisms. Theses mechanisms have been magical in the development of my vocal instruments as I can now utilize various vocal instruments that I never imagined I had in the past. I was able to open, strengthen, and develop my voice using numerous speaking and singing techniques. I was introduced to breathing, lip trills, and other techniques through which I practiced strengthening and development of my voice. Through these techniques, my voice became stronger and I stopped running short of breath. I can now sing different kinds of songs comfortably. I was able to discover my optimal voice through individual exercises and group work that I did throughout the course. For instance, the midterm performance of duet was very vital in increasing my range, tonal palette, and vocal stamina. I did not believe that my voice could reach such heights but the continued singing exercises, which took most part of our lessons, paid off since by the end of the course, my vocal stamina and breathing efficiency had improved tremendously. I was able to work on my ability to present sung material by following a comprehensive technique that involved musical preparation, phrasing, development of characters, and theatrical presentation. In the end, I was able to improve my use of vocal techniques in the performance of songs.
One of the things that went well during this course is the improvement of my vocal stamina. My voice became strong and I felt that I had developed the ability of singing for an extended period without the need for constant periods of rest. Furthermore, I developed the ability of singing different songs with ease. Previously, I found it difficult singing fast-paced songs. However, after the constant exercises in class and learning of breathing techniques, I developed the ability of singing fast-paced songs with ease. I also felt that the use of numerous vocal instruments went well for me. I never imagined that by just using my mouth, I could change one song into different forms by utilizing a wide range of vocal instruments. I now feel happy and confident with this achievement since I am aware that one of the key indicators of expertise in the field of music is the ability to utilize various vocal instruments effectively.
Considering that this was my first serious singing experience, it was highly likely that I would encounter a few challenges. Although I tried my best to learn fast, there are a few techniques and methods that I am struggling to learn. The use of various breathing techniques to improve my singing skills has been difficult for me. I am struggling to control my breathing pattern so that it can allow me to sing for an extended period and increase my voice range. Therefore, I need to work on my breathing efficiency so that I can increase my overall singing skills. I am also struggling with on-stage performances. I cannot handle the pressure of performing in front of many people. For instance, when practicing our songs while in a small group, I would sing perfectly but when required to perform in front of the class, I could not perform with the same efficiency. The presentation of human emotions on stage is also an issue that I am struggling to learn. Most of the time, I will sing a song but my facial and bodily reactions do not match with the message of the song. Therefore, expression of human emotions on-stage is another issue that I need to improve on. To troubleshoot the aspects that remain difficult, I will have to increase the frequency of my practice sessions. I will first focus on the breathing techniques, which I can practice at the comfort of my room every time I am free. I will then look for occasions that I can get a chance of performing on-stage so that I can improve the way I present human emotions in my performances.
This course has been unique to me as it was more practical than theoretical. I was able to improve my singing skills by a huge margin. However, I have some questions concerning the learning techniques employed. For instance, I felt that the group songs allowed some students to relax and therefore, not learn as much as expected since others covered up for them. It is possible for the next learning sessions to be made of smaller groups? Can the students be allowed more time to practice under the instructor’s watch?
I was surprised by the fact that singing can turn out to be fun and easy for me even when I thought that I never possessed the mellow voice that is needed for one to be a good singer. I was also surprised by the short amount of time taken to develop the necessary skills for musical performances. I thought that it required years of training for one to become good in singing. The large number of students who could perfectly sing a song and leave one feeling as if it was a professional musician who just performed in front of them also surprised me.
