I believe that ethics is instrumental in not only in my field, psychology, but thoughout the professional world. Without ethics there is no real barometer as to what can and cannot be done. In order for people to have a standard by which to behave and act there needs to be something in place that is not necessarily a rule or law, but would not be within ethical guidelines. This list comes into play with the ethics guidelines for psychology. Psychologists deal with patients, for the most part, on a face to face basis. Through this interaction there is an obvious and understood exchange of information throughout the interaction. There are some obvious inclusions throughout the code, such as the protection of people’s privacy, but then there are some that stuck out to me that need to be remembered by not only myself but my peers and co-workers as well.
Through our time as psychologists there may be times that we wish to perform some sort of research and study. Through this we need to make sure that we are following the ethical guidelines so that it is completed in an ethical and compliant way. We need to make sure that our participants are aware of the study, and if we decide to record them in anyway, need to make sure they are aware and they consent to this recording. This is something that needs to be a main focus because it comes into play with the larger picture of the person’s privacy and their right to be aware of what they are participating in.
Some of the best practices I am seeing where I currently work, along with previous places of employment, is the privacy of the person that is considered our client. Throughout many places of work it was common practice for people to be aware of who is around when conducting a conversation as well. When exiting a meeting room with the client it is well-known that there must not be any discussion outside of that room about what happened, this was understood by the client as well as the psychologist themselves. This common practice can easily be known as a best practice because it is one that maintained the level of privacy that allowed the ethical guidelines and procedures to be met. I strongly believe that the influence this practice has had on my professional career has been a positive as well as a monumental one. I am extremely happy to admit that there has never been a privacy issue when it comes to the patient’s personal stories or information and any workplace I have been with. I will continue to practice this not only in my professional life, but in my personal life as well.
Throughout my time as a psychologist it has become apparent to me that we gain friendships with our co-workers and colleagues. I believe that these relationships can cause an ethical and moral dilemma. Through the lunch room and over drinks at happy hour it is very tempting to share what we experienced that day and to gain advice from our co-workers and sometimes those that have been working in the field longer than us. Through this it is necessary to maintain the stance and the belief that the privacy of the client is of the upmost importance. I have been able to maintain this stance and made sure to not discuss anything that would morally or ethically place my client in harm of their personal information being shared. It is extremely difficult, however, for me and my colleagues and we want to be on the same page when it comes to new and interesting experiences. However, we understand that it is extremely necessary to keep this information to ourselves, as we are never sure who is listening, or we are never sure when this information is something that the client did not want anyone else to know about, which is usually the case in our field.
