For this project I interviewed a number of women and men regarding whether or not they have experience sexual harassment in the workplace. I then compared the findings to determine if there were any gender differences between their responses. The first woman I interviewed said that she had in fact experienced sexual harassment in the workplace. She stated that this sexual harassment occurred when she was working in a restaurant and one of the managers would comment on her clothing in what she felt was inappropriate ways. Similarly, a bartender would touch her in ways that she did not appreciate being touched. Another woman I talked to said that she had never experienced sexual harassment on the job. This individual noted that the majority of her jobs were in office environments and that she didn’t think such things generally occurred there. I also spoke with two men regarding sexual harassment. The first man indicated that he never out rightly experienced sexual harassment, but that he did have a female manager once that would flirt with him. The managers’ flirting, he said, he was able to use to his advantage to get special favors. The second man I spoke with said that when he worked at a grocery store he would sometimes feel he was being sexually harassed by the older women he worked with, as they would call him cute and comment on his appearance. However, he said while he felt slightly embarrassed by it, he never was deeply offended. In considering the gender differences, the main difference is that while the men experienced sexual harassment as something welcomed or to use to their advantage, the females instead viewed it as something that was threatening and that they needed to guard themselves against. The differences between these individuals is something that is possibly attributable to men being stronger than females and females needing to protect themselves, on an evolutionary level, from aggressive and forced male advances. Similarly, it may be attributed to society mocking males for complaining about such treatment.
