Personality tests have been in existence since the 1920s. The validity of personality tests is questionable and a single individual may get multiple results from different personality tests. The subject of this paper is the result of a personality test taken using the International Personality Item Pool Representation known as NEO PI-R. This test focused on five generalized personality traits of individuals such as extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, openness to experience and neuroticism. These character traits are also known as the big five and successful individuals have high scores on these five traits.
This personality test included ‘sub-personalities’ that build up each major character trait. The test demonstrated average results with regards to extraversion and agreeableness. The values for conscientiousness and openness to experience are low whereas the values for neuroticism are high. I do not agree with these results at all. Throughout life, I have been a high performer and an overachiever. I strongly feel that my personality is characterized by high levels of neuroticism, openness to experience, extraversion, agreeableness, and conscientiousness. Nevertheless, I admit that when I was very young, my personality was markedly different and I was more of an introvert. Even the members of my family claim that as a child, I was more laid back and less competitive in comparison to today. A popular saying states that that people don’t change; but eventually, people become who they ultimately are. This may be the explanation for the difference between who I think I am versus who I really am deep down. Further, the fact that I am introverted does not necessarily mean that I am not likely to succeed in life.
