I think Kathleen did a very good job as a manager in this situation. At the first meeting, when she was talking to Janeen about her problems, she showed herself both as a strict boss and as a reliable friend. She emphasized Janeen's dedication to work for several times, and she was very understanding, sympathetic and supportive. She realized that Janeen might be treated subjectively by the human recourse management office, so she gave Janeen a chance to overcome the difficulties, she gave her some time to get herself in order. Thus, Kathleen's managerial performance was really high.
Unfortunately, at their second meeting Janeen started accusing Kathleen of being dishonest and unfair. I can understand Janeen's frustration and stress, but it was really not Kathleen's fault. For one thing, it was not up to her to decide which five people would have to leave. And for another thing, it was not just Janeen, but four more employees. Thus, Janeen's accusations were rather unjust and bitter. I think Kathleen felt really bad because of Janeen's comments because she really wanted to defend her friend, and she did not deserve such treatment.
I believe Kathleen is a good manager and she dealt with the situation very well. I do not think I could do it any better. She was fair, honest, helpful and at the same time professional. At the first meeting she gave Janeen a really fantastic chance to change everything without telling the HRM about her problems. At the second meeting, Kathleen really tried to keep calm, although Janeen was making it rather unbearable by her unfair accusations. Kathleen is a good professional with proper approach and techniques.
