Personal Statement
I wish to apply to study Mathematics at your university. I have always had a keen interest in maths, and I feel I have the necessary skills, qualifications and attitude to achieve highly, both academically and personally.
The concept of proof holds a great fascination for me. The process of beginning with a set of axioms, and developing almost any mathematical truth is what really distinguishes Mathematics from any other academic subject.
I have tried to advance my Maths skills and knowledge as much as possible. Ibn Khaldun, al-Muqaddim said: "Education should be started with mathematics. For it forms well designed brains that are able to reason right. It is even admitted that those who have studied maths during their childhood should be trusted, for they have acquired solid bases for arguing which become to them a sort of second nature''. Reading the books and class notes by him, and others, has especially increased my interest in Mathematics.
I already have a BSc degree in Physics, along with A Level Sciences. In addition to this, I have had vocational training in IT and am computer and internet literate. I have also worked as an IT advisor at Technology Exploration NGO, and on the IT help desk at Brazza Service.com.
I have spent time as a voluntary teacher in a school, teaching subjects such as Maths, Physics and Chemistry. The experience of teaching maths provided me with a good opportunity to explore new mathematical ideas myself, in addition to practicing the art of working with young people. Additionally, the work further instilled my ambition to become a teacher of Mathematics, when I graduate. In the future, I would also like to work for a large multinational company, such as Microsoft, Google or IBM.
I wish to study in the UK as the universities are open to people with motivation, ambition and determination to do well. Secondly, the UK provides excellent opportunities not only to gain professional qualifications of world-class standards, but also to live and work in a multicultural environment. Just as I enjoy travelling, I also like working and socialising with people of different cultures.
For the past three years, I have studied English language at Brasshouse Language Centre, and I am due to take my IELTS exams in June 2011. Therefore I am confident that I will have no problems studying a course taught in the English language.
In my spare time, I am an active footballer. I have participated in various local competitions. I enjoy both the physical aspects of the sport and the teamwork involved. I love working with other people in order to achieve a common goal.
I am conscientious, dedicated, and always give one hundred per cent in everything I do. I relish in working with other people and mutually sharing knowledge and experience, and am keen to bring my skills to a degree course.
I look forward to discovering the new ideas of degree level Mathematics, and playing a full part in University life.
