Personal Statement On Becoming A Primary Health Care Provider Serving My Community

I have always envisioned working closely with people in an intellectually stimulating environment, and, to my mind, a profession of pharmacist is one of the best ways to achieve this, combining the analytical thinking of a scientist with the empathy of a medical worker.
The decision to become a health care provider did not come out of nowhere. Possessing a pharmacy heritage, made it a lot easier for me to select the field I would like to develop in. When I was a child, shadowing my father and watching him counseling patients was a common thing for me. I saw him giving advice about the best OTC treatment for his patients, and making referrals to other medical providers when it was needed. It helped me to gain a valuable insight into the role of pharmacists in the society. Later on I understood that primary care providers can be determinative in improving the health of patients by choosing the most suitable drugs, avoiding all the possible side effects.
My desire to become a medical provider had reinforced after having a positive experience as a patient. When I was a child I had scoliosis, which was cured after the successful therapy and treatment. I am grateful to my doctor for helping me to overcome the disease, and for the huge inspiration he gave me, without even knowing about it. At that point I realized that I want to dedicate my life to saving and helping others, to make a difference in people’s lives.
There are many reasons behind choosing exactly UOP's School of Pharmacy, but the most significant is the fact that my father has also graduated from University of the Pacific Pharmacy School back in 70’s. He says that the impact of the program on his future career was tremendous, and until now he talks about days spent at school with delight.
Having a strong background in different volunteer projects, during which I have helped disabled children and seniors, I understand the challenge of being a pharmacist. For example, during the “Break the barrier” volunteer project I have understood the crucial role of empathy and good communication with people, especially with those who are in need of extra care and treatment. I sincerely believe that effective spoken and written skills are valuable in the toolkit of a good pharmacist.
I know what it takes to be a pioneer, as being a captain of our cheerleading team I still remember the challenges I have faced when I just started to practice. However I strongly believe that strong motivation and persistence, that helped me to achieve my goals until now, will assist me in the future. Without any hesitations I can assert that I am sure that Pharmacy is right for me. I am confident that with the help of your school I will become a professional I want to be, and my effective communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the tremendous desire to study will help me in it. Moreover, I strongly feel that your Pharmacy School will facilitate both my short and long term career goals, and will be a great step on my way to success.
