Personal Statement: Art, Science and Mathematics in Management.
It has often been said that science is an art. Art on the other hand is a tool used in expressing the real, unreal and emerging creativity that is captured by tangible sight, imagination and beyond what is known to be in the universe. From my experience as a student of International College of Continuous Education in Kazakhstan, art could as well be science; but it goes past just the description of the universe. Art and science correlate so well. Computers are gadgets made of science but used for art. Data stored in a computer are managed by systems in the machine, and it’s handling ranges from scientifically troubleshooting problems to the artistry of web design.
Figures are omnipresent; you can never avoid them. I look at math as part of life we can’t do without, and the International Mathematical Competition Certificate academic award I received in 2007 has reinforced these facts over the years. Calculations are as good as determining your destiny, but they are precise. An error of, say 0.1% could cost you, your life or what you are in charge of .
There is one aspect of dealing with everything that if ignored can prove fatal –and that is management. Whether it is in a business, in a family, in a government, in an institution –in life, how you manage it is the foundation of achievement. Management entails planning, organizing, directing, and monitoring effectively. For me to have completed my research papers in different fields like general biology and World War 2, all these ingredients were applicable. I have done piano lessons; I have delved into linguistics to learn new languages like English, Italian, and Kazakh to supplement my native Russian. It wouldn’t have been easy without management skills.
The world is an integrated system that is wired with human interactions. Humans are social animals with an understanding beyond instinct. That is where we get the power to manage; because we always have a choice. We can choose to go to war or resolve matters with diplomacy: That is management. Principles applied in management are similar regardless of different scenarios. The basics don’t change, what changes is the form. As a student of St.Stephen’s School, in Aventina, Rome, Italy, I am working for an IB diploma and doing an extended essay titled ‘War diaries’ in English. I manage to balance the two. I do realize that wars happen because humans intermingle but without management.
In ancient times, those who were appointed to rule over the masses had certain qualities. Whether warriors lost or won wars depended on the management skills of their commander. They were provided with a team of elite men who understood the world of science as well as the language of digits. Management is required virtually everywhere; in hospitals, in schools, in businesses, in teams. Management is synonymous with virtues; I am persistent, perfectionist, responsible, punctual –all characters acquired from management. Management knows no race or creed. I have travelled far and wide; from United Arabic Emirates, Turkey, Uzbekistan; to England, Italy, France, Ex-Yugoslavia (where I studied the conflict between Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina, in the spring of 2011); to Beijing China; to the USA, and I am yet to find a place prospering without management. It’s intricate, but achievable to everyone who needs it. I can roll all these qualities into one rounded package, and set the ball rolling for many institutions.
