The innumerable challenges facing human beings on a frequent basis intrigue me, and this feeling heighten my desire to help people overcome their medical challenges regardless of their backgrounds and affiliations. Orhan Pamuk’s quote, “I don’t want to be a tree; I want to be its meaning’ has been my greatest source of inspiration when it comes to defining my ambitions in life. I have excelled in academics, and as well produced exceptional results in all aspects of my practical medical experience. My desire and willingness to learn, coupled with my friendly and cooperative nature increases my inspiration and lifelong ambitions of becoming an internal medicine practitioner. Since I started my medical school, the complex interactions among various systems of the human body have fascinated me. My interactions with various patients and conditions during my working experiences have propelled me towards the residency program where I will be able to analyze a wide range of diseases. This opportunity will also grant me the opportunity of applying my strong interpersonal skills, and the ability of paying attention to detail during the management of complex cases and therapeutic modalities surrounding human diseases.
The coalescence to pursue medicine was because I lived watching my mother suffer from Asthma, and this pain increased my overarching desire to pursue medicine as a lifelong career. I could not help wanting to relieve the suffering my mother underwent during the severe asthma attacks. Whereas the dreams of many a person in my country were tied to politics and careers in other authoritative offices, my passion for medicine has been my childhood dream. I always admired and respected doctors and vowed to work hard to achieve my dream of becoming an accomplished physician and serve humanity. I believe the residency program in this institution will be a significant milestone towards the realization of my lifelong goals and career ambitions.
The medical profession is an extremely challenging and demanding career, but I understand the immense rewards associated with it. This acknowledgment increases my urge to pursue a career in medicine. Furthermore, an opportunity in the residency program will allow me to serve humanity. The residency program needs reliable and committed individuals who can be entrusted with caring for the lives of patients. I do possess these qualities, and I truly want to leave an impact on the lives of patients, and helping them during difficult and challenging times. Embracing the challenges and taking advantage of changes in the medical field will help me in advancing my career. The residency program will provide an exceptional platform for the development of my technical and clinical skills in addition to expanding my understanding of issues related to the promotion of patient education and patient care.
I have accumulated immense experience, in both my educational career and in practical experiences. As a medical student, I rotated through various departments, which helped in expanding my understanding of the practice of medicine. My time in Internal Medicine sums up as one of the highest points in my career because I enjoyed the opportunity of examining patients systematically. It also enabled me to exercise focus while diagnosing patients with diverse conditions and medical histories. During internal medicine rotations and while undertaking Cardiology and Neurology electives, I developed increased interests in understanding concepts surrounding patient information. Personal interactions with patients provided a source of satisfaction because it provided the opportunity of spending more time with patients and strengthening connections with them. I could spend more time with the patients helping while them to understand their medical condition. I found emotional ties to my patients extremely fulfilling, but I also enjoyed the practical skills and the interpersonal demands of working with others that this field required.
Other experiences have been acquired after completion of the medical school. For instance, experiences acquired from a one-year internship at Jinnah Postgraduate Medical centre coupled with other experiences gained from a 4-month experience acquired while working as a medical officer at Lohana Medical Centre in Karachi have contributed to my preparedness in the residency program. With or without supervision, I managed patients and completed several minor procedures, thereby increasing my confidence levels that could not be acquired during my life as a student. Throughout my carrier, I have actively participated in different volunteer activities, community services as well as different extracurricular activities including quiz competitions, debates, edited a university community magazine among other events, which have contributed in the expansion of my communication and leadership skills. Such experiences have heightened my desire to secure a residency program in prestigious medical institutions in the US. I have already pursued an externship in the department of Family Medicine and Community Health at University of Pennsylvania Health system, Philadelphia. I can attest that this experience was one of the best experiences I have had in my life. I became accustomed to the American health system and its ethics, while improving my interpersonal and communication skills. I have also worked as a volunteer research assistant on a project (AMOR-IPAT) as the beginning of my obligation to give back to the community.
While medicine offers worthy paths, I am attracted to the diversity and breadth offered by internal medicine in addition to the exceptional patient care and medical involvement. I intend to capitalize on the opportunities offered by the residency program by applying my skills and knowledge to conduct research, practice academic and clinical medicine, and pass knowledge to young students in addition to helping patients in their healing processes. As I am drawn to medicine, my overarching passion for internal medicine remains the same. My desire is to become an outstanding internal medicine expert and, to be well equipped for a great career in the medical field. By securing a residency program, I look forward to providing compassionate care to patients, develop life-long interactions with colleagues and patients, and face the endeavors and challenges associated with my career. I believe in the capabilities of the strong US healthcare system, the diversity of research opportunities, and I intend to become to become a valuable asset in the field of internal medicine across the US. My discipline, hard work, and self-motivation will not only enable me to excel in the residency program but it will also draw me closer to the realization of my dream.
