It was during my senior year in Bentley University that my career path had become very definite to me. In this regard, the first step of my career plan is to become a professional accountant. The sudden awareness of this objective can be based on the accumulated experiences of every struggle I had encountered—both achievement and defeat—which made me a more mature person.
I studied Bachelor’s degree in Corporate Finance and Accounting in Bentley University, whereby almost all of the courses require team work projects. As such, in this context I have been trained to communicate effectively with others and develop strong analytical skills. However, I did not really choose accounting to begin with during my undergraduate degree. My primary basis for this hesitation is that I did not do well in one of my basic accounting courses during my freshman year. I felt so defeated that I thought I was not suited to fit-in in the accounting profession. I began by majoring in finance, but as time progressed, I discovered, to my benefit, that both accounting and finance are very much closely interrelated that it is a necessity to acquire knowledge in both fields in order to be successful in my academic pursuit. Accordingly, during my senior year, I changed my major from Finance to Corporate Finance and Accounting. Further, to compensate my weakness and lack of confidence in studying accounting, I studied day and night for those accounting courses not only to get a good grade but also to give myself a chance to overcome a ‘failed past’. In this regard, I really like the quote stating that ‘hard work pays off’, given that it is primarily through hard work that I have succeeded in defeating my aforementioned weaknesses. As a testament to my victory, when I got my first midterm back my professor gave me two words that I will never forget. He said: ‘Hey Milo, Good Job!’ I not only got an “A” on that exam but perhaps more importantly also learned a valuable lesson in my life. This life lesson is: ‘do not deny yourself of the chance to be better simply because of moments of defeat’.
After four years of studying at Bentley University and after gaining practical experiences in related fields, I am now prepared to apply to your MBA program. This endeavor will definitely be a beneficial task, given that your esteemed MBA program can assist me in developing advanced skills, knowledge and ethical standards necessary in the accounting profession. Further, your faculty can bring real-life global business expertise to the classroom to better prepare students for the field. These benefits are accentuated even more by your different class and professional path choices that students can apply in their academics. More so, the fact that most of the students already have work experiences allow me to establish a network that can benefit me in terms of gaining international contacts and perspectives.
It is my aspiration to work in one of the ‘Big 4’ after the graduate program. In addition to this goal, I likewise intend to become a manager and even a partner of the Big 4. In this regard, while I am aware that at present this is just a dream of a university student seeking acceptance to your MBA program, I am also certain of one thing: that I will keep on moving forward until I have reached my dream!
