Writing Supplement – Columbia University
I have always been fascinated by the written word; from the first time I picked up a book, to my own literary efforts today, the thrill of language has been an inextricable part of my life. Of particular interest to me is literary fiction: I pride myself on being a student of literature in my free time as well as in academia, always taking on new books and reading every day. I dive as best I can into literary criticism and scholarship of major works, and keep an eye on what new literary trends are driving the authors of today. I am fascinated by the ways in which literary expression is taking shape in this new era of eBooks, on-demand literature, and portable libraries of books. To that end, I feel that the English Department of Columbia University in New York is the logical and necessary next step in my evolution as a writer and scholar.
Columbia’s English Department has a tremendous reputation for having the best faculty, the most challenging courses, and the most enlightening conferences and practica for a budding student of the English language and its accompanying literature. The pursuit of a greater understanding of both classic and contemporary literature intrigues me, and so I believe the sheer number of opportunities I could avail myself of at Columbia University’s English Department befit my passion and interest. To put it bluntly, I wish to dedicate my life to the understanding of the written word – past, present and future – in order to best discover what literature will become as time, technology and society advance. It is my most sincere belief that Columbia University is the best platform on which to pursue this level of study.
