The shale reservoir cannot be complete without understanding the mechanical properties of a rock. The shale samples of North America and South China have been used to conduct tests to check the brittleness of the rock. The tests concluded that the black shales are brittle and the shale from China had good power with low Poisson’s ratio and higher Young’s modulus when compared to the shale of North America. The three dimension Mohr representation method identified the active fractures and determined the hydraulic channels in hydraulic fracture stimulation treatment on a reservoir rock. The stimulation measures can be derived by calculating the strength properties, the width of the fracture and the closure stress.
The brittleness of a rock is usually calculated on the elastic deformation rate and rock crystal composition. In the tests that were conducted, the brittleness for a well was attained by logging data. The logged data indicated that the brittleness of a rock is subjected to failure, and the ability of fracturing initiation well. Brittleness index is usually stated using Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio. Young’s modulus determines the failure properties and Poisson’s ratio determines the ability to change the stress after the crack in the fracture. High pressure servo test was conducted on the shale gas reservoirs in North America and South China to determine failure methods and behavior of shales.
As described earlier the mechanical properties of shale play an important role in shale gas investigation, and hydraulic fracturing must be designed and conducted after careful analysis of these mechanical properties. The failure modes must be tested using Young’s modules to clearly identify the initial work involved in horizontal drilling and hydraulic fracturing. Though the article presents the tests conducted for gas shale in a laboratory to design an efficient hydraulic fracturing, it also provides information on the brittleness of the rock; its failure modes, capability of fracturing, and how high brittle shale can be used to stimulate complex fractures, and propagation in the reservoir.
