Piaget’s cognitive theory is a theory that explains the development of a child and the human intelligence as a whole. According to Piaget, a person’s childhood always matters a lot and contributes greatly to development their cognitive development. This idea is commonly known as a development stage theory. Using the four stage of cognitive, the experiment given to the kids by Piaget would yield different outcomes. Piaget argues that in the field of education, cognitive development occurred in two stages, that is Assimilation and accommodation and the two go hand in hand so that their interdependent on each other entirely.
In the first stage of development, the child extensively constructs knowledge and understanding of their environment and the world at large with regard to their experiences they have had in the past. In this stage, the child uses basic features such as vision, hearing and even feeling to determine the required knowledge all these experiences are coordinated in a manner that enables the child to formulate a decisive knowledge pattern. In the second phase, the child begins to speak. Piaget noticed that at this stage a child still does not understand the logics since at this point they still cannot mentally manipulate the information they gather. The third stage is the symbolic function sub stage and this occurs at the age of between four to two years of age, the child cannot manipulate the transformations in a logical manner. At this stage, the children still have limitations such as geocentrism and precasual thinking. Geocentrism, for instance, occurs when a child is unable to distinguish between their perspective and of another person.
In the experiment, therefore, the basic thinking of the child will make them think that the bigger an object is, the heavier it is bound to be. Therefore, using the same logic, the child will say that a bigger wood chunk will sink and a smaller piece of metal will float on water which is not the case.
