Picasso is considered to be among the most influential and innovative artists by historians in the 20th century. Indeed his artistic works inspire so many people during his time even his critics agree to that fact. He has received this magnitude of fame because of the quality and uniqueness with which he presented his work.
Picasso brought into the field of art new means of fragmentation of renaissance space or perspective. Several innovations in collage are also accredited to him. He did several unique works in assemblage and found objects of art during his time. In the field of sculpture, he pioneered the introduction of a constructionist approach. Picasso also impacted on the development of modernism in artwork and the abstraction technique that he introduced is of major importance to the current artists. With all these contributions in the field of art, Picasso can be deemed to be the most prominent artist in the 20th century.
Picasso’s specific works that ushered in a more revolutionary way of showing reality include the Les Demoiselles d'Avignon. The painting was a landmark one as it broke all the traditional rules that were followed by artist of that time. Picassos painting boldly broke even the rules that defined artwork as an imitation rather that a piece of creation. Picasso is greatly applauded for his boldness, creativity and uniqueness with which he performed his work.
Picasso together with Braque made a tremendous contribution in analytical cubism. In his masterpiece of Portrait of Ambrose Vollard or 1910, his power as a caricaturist has been demonstrated by the presentation of the bald floating head. It emerged as a defining characteristic of many viewpoints that emanate from the muted monochromes of an angular maze.
Picasso also laid a very important ground work in depicting a fourth dimension of time/space continuum. In his work, Woman with Mandolin of 1910, he portrayed his expertise in sculpture. He fragmented the body of a girl into facets that are modeled to encourage their protrusion out of the plane of the flat picture towards the viewers’ direction. The woman is also portrayed in movement as she strums her mandolin.
All the contributions made by Picasso in the field of art and architecture depicts him as a great artist of the 20th century. His contribution in modernizing the techniques used in the field of art has been shown by his great works that aimed to break the traditional rules that governed the work of art during his time.
