Part I Photos
Actual Photograph of Object (Potatoes)
Part II
The subject chosen for the current assignment were few potatoes that were tied in a net envelope. I chose potatoes as the subject as these were readily available for photography and could be varied with lights and digital photography effects to make them appear as stones or mud or even dirt or dust in dark light. In order to conduct the current assignment, the subject that included potatoes were subjected to many different forms of lights under tube light, dim lights, bright lights and along with other subjects such as flowers. Such variations were considered necessary to make them look like stones or other non-living material that is inedible. The potatoes are a static object and it is advantageous to use such a subject for photography purpose as the subject does not move at all while photography and it becomes much easier to shoot at different angles and different light conditions for variation in texture and the appearance of the potatoes. The normal color of the potatoes is light brown which is clearly visible only in one of the pictures and when different strokes of lights and other objects are used, potatoes do not appear like potatoes but may look like other objects. Different objects such as stationary objects like potatoes when subjected to the varying conditions and other objects look like moving objects such as animals or other stationary objects such as pebbles or stones. I had the liberty of placing the object wherever I wanted and whatever way I wanted to and also could take as many photographs as possible and apply different photographic effects on the pictures to make them look different from the original picture that has been included in the end.
Doing this assignment was much different from doing a theoretical term paper in many ways. This assignment forced me to think creatively about an object that I would be able to photograph in various conditions to make a composition that would be creative and different. The availability of the object at my location was one of the most important conditions to initiate and complete this project. A normal term paper requires me to research some scholarly articles and books through library and online resources and use my writing skills to frame an essay. However, this assignment is quite different as it helps me to develop my academic skills of writing a creative paper and also helps me in enhancing my creative skills that are appropriately used in the photography of the object at various angles and light conditions, in the editing of the photographs, the selection of the photographs that should be included for submission in this assignment and the thought process involved in choosing an object and making it look much different than its actual appearance. A term paper normally does not involve the use of a digital camera such as those in cell phones or other digital devices, but usually requires textual knowledge. However, this assignment has been a unique learning experience as it forced me to think through my creative mindset on what to photograph, how to vary the photography conditions and how to make my photographs creative and speak for themselves.
