Answers to the test
One of the main concerns of any learning fraternity is plagiarism. Plagiarism has made the teachers not to be able to identify and know the individual student’s personal take on the various assignments that have been assigned to them. The abilities of the students to read, write and even express their own personal opinions has been greatly affected by this act which has mostly been facilitated by the unlimited access to information from online resources. Since the advent of internet there has been increased access to all forms of information and already done assignments and projects. This limitless access to the various written materials on almost every topic has greatly affected students’ writing, reading and also their ability to think critically.
Plagiarism can be defined as the situation where a writer uses someone else’s work and language deliberately. It can also be the copying of other’s ideas or their original work without acknowledging them as the source of the information. This can be done through the use of published texts, manuscripts or as simple as through some other student’s work. Plagiarism is as delicate as the line between closely related ideas and straight up copy pasting. Distinguishing between plagiarism and complete misuse of sources is always a sensitive issue.
There is the case where one can try and twist some other person’s ideas to make it look as their own words and ideas and there is on the other hand the case where one just carelessly chooses to inadequately cite ideas and words they borrow from another sources. In order to be an ethical writer, one should always try to appropriately mention their sources in accordance to the context of their writing. The mere mention of a source one has used for their article will go a long way to be appreciated and in that case the writer will not have plagiarised the work. Even if the mention is just carelessly placed in the article, the effort is just enough to free the writer of plagiarism.
There are multiple reasons to why students opt to plagiarize. Among them is failure and fear of failure. They may lack confidence in their own work and therefore opt for an already done piece that was approved. Some also plagiarise due to laziness and poor time management skills which hinder from being able to meet deadlines. Nonetheless there are various ways through which plagiarism can be avoided. In this regard, it is the initiative of the student and the teacher alike to try and curb this scourge. Instructors must always support their students in their research and writing situations so as to pinpoint to the students any slight case of plagiarism and if this is done effectively, the students may learn ways to avoid plagiarism. Students from other cultures may not be conversant with plagiarism and so need the guidance of how to avoid it the most. Students on the other hand must always consult when they are unsure of how to acknowledge their sources in order to avoid plagiarism. On the same note, the institution must also design and build a learning and assessment system that encourages the student to investigate through the analysis of models or group work.
Part 2
The article by Kavanaugh, P. R. (2012) titled The Continuum of Sexual Violence: Women’s Accounts of Victimization in Urban Nightlife attempts to dichotomize the various types of sexual victimizations that women always experience. As Kavanaugh (2012) mentions in his article, several researches have been done on topic of youth and young adult sexual victimization even though there is very few researches that have tried to delineate the various types of victimizations that are always suffered by the above mentioned group of people. Ideally, Kavanaugh research article can be viewed as an article that attempts to fill a research gap on the topic of sexual victimization. When viewed critically, sexual victimization has a profound impact on the ones psychological functioning. In this regard, the article can be considered to be pertinent in helping me understand how various life experiences might impact on ones psychological functioning.
