1. What is the metaphor in line 4?
The metaphor in line 4 is invocative of the emptiness of old age. The speaker is comparing the lively song of spring bird-songs to youth. The poem takes place when these songs of since ceased for the speaker, and instead of “sweet” bird songs, there is now just “Bare ruined choirs.”
2. What is the extended metaphor in lines 1-4?The extended metaphor is invoking the season of Winter (or perhaps the end of Fall) with the time in the speaker’s life. The image is that of a single or a few yellow leafs still clinging to a tree, the last bits of life left.
