People’s attitude towards political parties does not differ much in all over the globe. People always think of them as of cheaters who only want money and care about themselves rather than the public welfare. But nevertheless, political parties play a crucial role in the modern democratic world.
Firstly, the whole parliament consists of the representatives of the people and political parties organize them. The party that gained the majority of votes forms a government and those parties left form an opposition. The opposition tries to find mistakes made by the government and point them out, which basically should move the work of the parliament and make the government more responsible. Thus, all these things won’t be possible if there were no political parties.
Secondly, parties are like bridges between the people and the government. They pick up people’s needs, analyze their demands, discuss it and then form policy alternatives. So, again political parties play an important role in the whole political process.
Thirdly, every political party has its own program and policy, which provides electors with a variety of choices in the political marketplace. After getting into a parliament a party can start engraining these ideas.
And last but not the least, parties either oversee or rule the work of the government, depending on whether they form the parliament or the opposition. For example, from year 2006 to year 2014 the Democratic Party was the majority one in the United States. While the second of the biggest parties in the US, which is the Republican Party, has held a majority in the Senate since 2014 elections.
But the reality is that not every party fulfills its duties and work adequately. Some are fundamentally weak and relies only on the personal convictions of its leader. Also, if they are not connected to the society properly they will remain distant from the voters and their concerns.
Some say that parties behave responsibly only in the states where the people are highly educated and politically conscious. But what is known for sure is that the one cannot think of the work of representative government in the absence of political parties.
