FBI investigates Virginia’s governor income sources. Democrat Terry McAuliffe who is the governor of Virginia became the object of an ongoing investigation of the FBI and prosecutors from the Department of Control over the integrity of civil servants of the Ministry of Justice. The investigation began last year, and it focused, at least partially, on the violation of the law in collecting funds for the campaign of the governor. This information was highlighted in a statement of law enforcement officials.
Investigators have not notified McAuliffe that he is the subject of the investigation. However, the governor, of course, is ready to cooperate with the government, if he will be asked to. Marc Elias who is the Governor’s lawyer told this information to the CNN (Perez, Prokupecz, and Brown "VA Gov. Terry McAuliffe under Investigation for Campaign Contributions.").
During the inspection, investigators carefully examined the activity of McAuliffe as the Clinton Global Initiative board member, it is the charitable foundation established by former President Bill Clinton. The investigators did not find anything illegal in the Fund’s activity; the investigation mainly focused on McAuliffe and donations for his election campaign.
Among the McAuliffe’s donations, $ 120,000 from the Chinese executive, who had previously served as a delegate to the Congress of China, caused some special interest. This executive was also a donor to the Clinton Foundation, New York University, Harvard University and environmental organizations in Florida.
US Elections Act prohibits foreign donations in federal and local elections and elections at the state level. Violation of this law is punishable by fines or imprisonment. However, the sponsor has the status of a permanent resident of the United States that, in accordance with the electoral law makes him a US resident and gives him the right to donate to McAuliffe campaign.
