Huge number of women across the world suffers from polycystic ovarian syndrome. This is one of the most common hormonal problems, found in premenopausal women. Effects of PCOS could be minimized by changing eating patterns and consuming healthy food.
Healthy Food: Women suffering from PCOS should eat sufficient amount of fruits, vegetables, salads and food that consists high amount of fiber as well as vitamins. However it is recommended not to consume juices that have kilojoules and high sugar. Wholegrain breads and cereals should be preferred over rice, biscuits and other bakery items in order to minimize the intake of starch and high energy. It is also important to include moderate amount of lean protein in the diet. Chicken, eggs, dairy products, fish, legumes food items and nuts should be important part of daily nutrition because of minerals and calcium (Brown, 2008). Fat should be consumed in form of monounsaturated and omega 3 fatty acids. Olive oil is good source of omega 3 fatty acids.
While making a selection of food items, it is important to choose food that is low in GI (Glycaemic Index). GI shows how rapidly blood glucose increases after consuming different types of carbohydrates. Low GI foods help in improving insulin level which supports body in utilizing energy, taken from the food (Bussell, 2007).
People can comply with healthy diet by spreading their meals evenly through the day and avoid overeating. It helps in maintaining blood sugar and insulin level. Taking large amount of carbohydrates in a single meal should be avoided. The quantity of Fruits, vegetables and salad should be more than half of the meal.
