Abstract
It is an undeniable fact that security is a major issue for any developer as he sets up his premises. Statistics indicate that the rates of disappearance of property come with a low level of security measures. For this reason, it is vital for premise owners to put in place some measures to ensure the security of their property. This essay looks at the various areas that are potential burglar entry points. It then looks at the various methods of improving security within the compound.
Potential Security Vulnerability
Physical security is one of the issues to consider when setting up a premise. This is because security cannot be compromised for anything else. When considering security measures, it is worth noting that the locks, windows, gates and walls do not act as a potential deterrent for criminals. For this reason, the protection measures should address the points most likely to be used by burglars, such as the ones discussed below.
According to San Diego Police Department (2011), darkness acts as c good cover for burglars. Therefore, in case the compound is not well lit, burglars can find it quite easy to sneak in and out. For this reason, the lighting systems within the premises should be well planned. This helps to eliminate the cover of darkness. Proper lighting, by far, prevents acts of burglary. The security guard should also have a spotlight that can be used to illuminate the dark corners within the compound.
Though the doors and windows are a major concern for the burglars, reinforcing them acts as a good measure of security. It is seldom reported that burglars break windows and doors and if this happens, it is purely accidental (Lock-it-Block-it, 2011). As such, the doors and windows should be reinforced with proper locks. Sliding doors and windows should be avoided and if present, they should be well reinforced. Otherwise, they act as security breaches.
One factor that burglars usually utilize is stealth. That is, they try to get in unnoticed. For this, they need either a very noisy environment such that the noises of their entrance cannot be detected. Alternatively, they ensure that their entrance is so smooth such that their presence cannot be noticed. For this reason, the developer should have a means of detecting unfamiliar motions or indicators of increased occupancy (Center for Problem Oriented Policing, 2012). To deal with this issue, there are various measures that can be employed. First of all, there can be the installation of Closed-circuit television cameras (CCTV) which indicates any new presence.
According to Lock-it-block-it (2011), the owner of the premise can also practice some simple procedures that can really improve the security in the premise. For instance, the windows should not be left wide ajar, as so does the doors. The music or any noises in the premises should be kept at a level where a person inside can easily hear whatever is happening outside. The owner should also not leave any notes or cues that can tip off burglars on the premises. As such, the owner should not leave notes anywhere around the house. As the saying goes, it is better to be safe than sorry.
