Fingerprints identification has a very long history in the criminal justice department. It is the perfect way to track and pick out a criminal from the suspects. This makes it raise a lot of questions of what makes it the best way to identify a criminal. The question leads to the two premises of fingerprint identification.
Fingerprint identification has two major premises; uniqueness and persistence (permanence). Every person has a unique fingerprint that is different from everyone else. It is not easy, almost impossible, to have to share the same fingerprint patterns. Uniqueness premise gives fingerprint identification the most reliable way to separate between two people. Uniqueness also ensures that an innocent person is not convicted of a crime they did not commit. The criminal justice department has never encountered a case where there are two or three people sharing the same patterns since the inception of the identification method.
Apart from its uniqueness, fingerprint identification is permanent. We are born with a fingerprint pattern which does not change until we die. The friction ridges and furrows do not change pattern even when we grow older. A fingerprint can only get messed up in the case of an accident or when one gets in contact with a very corrosive acid. Apart from these cases, a person cannot distort their fingerprint as the skin will always grow back to its original form. As long as the criminal justice has the fingerprint database of all the citizens, they will always be able to refer to the repository and gather as much information as possible about the criminal. Therefore, it can be concluded that the biggest strength that fingerprint identification has is that it is a unique way to identify a criminal and that a fingerprint is permanent.
