I would like to thank DUI Court for the work it is doing to help people like me (Cretacc 351). It is a hard work to ensure that people do not drink and drive. I look back at my life a year ago, and though it has only been 12 months it has been a period of transformation. Today, February 26th, 2013 marks a year since I drank alcohol for the last time, and all this has been made possible by DUI court. Again, I am very grateful.
My life before joining DUI court was without any direction. I had no visions or any goals in life. I could wake up with a hangover from the previous night of drinking and all I could think of was how I was going to get the next bottle of beer to get myself high with. I remember there was a time I was driving while drunk and I was going at a very dangerous speed, and I almost got into a ditch. Lucky enough I managed to stop the car, and I got out of it without a single scratch.
When I heard about DUI court, I was more willing to join the program as I had tried severally to quit alcoholism, but I was not able to. I found myself looking for alcohol every time I went a day or two without it. When I started the program, I did not believe I would totally be independent of alcohol. However after going through the phases, I slowly forgot about alcohol, and there reached a time I did not think about alcohol at all.
Taking the DUI court program made a turning point in my life. I really feel like I have been relieved of the heavy burden that has been barging me for a very long time. In my mind, I have this picture of me being set free from these chains that have been holding me down, and I am now unrestricted to do something constructive with my life. Adopting a drug-free lifestyle has made me think about starting a family of my own. As a matter of fact, being on a sober mind made me go through a nine months pregnancy period, and I got my first child on December 25th last year. Her name is Athena. I have also been able to maintain a fulltime job to provide for my daughter and myself.
Upon starting the DUI court program, the only major challenge I experienced was a change in lifestyle during the first days. I, however, managed to deal with it, and I got used to my new and responsible lifestyle. The positive experiences I have encountered are countless. Fist having goals in my life makes me feel there is a reason to wake up tomorrow. I have enough time for the people I love.
What I liked most about DUI court is the fact that the staff is so caring and patient. They have time for everyone individually (Neeley 18).
I have great plans for my future. At the moment, I have a fulltime job as I wait to join school and further my studies. After completing my education, I want to get a good job and but a home for my family.
