Article II of the United States constitution defines some of the powers of the president. The article II defines the power and duty to execute the laws made by the congress as the major power accorded to the United States President. Under this article, the president has the power to make executive orders that do not need approval of the congress and still have a full effect of the law. The president is also entitled to other powers in article two; he has the power to veto, that is, he has the authority to reject any of the bills that have been backed up by both houses hence barring a bill from being implemented as a law. The president can also make appointments of the federal judges, members of the cabinet, diplomats as well as the house staff. Article II also grants the president the power to pardon as well as commute sentences for crime.
The executive powers granted to the president in article II have dominated some of the recent and current policy debates. This is due to the fact that the relationship between the president and the congress has been compromised in article II by allowing the president to make orders without the president’s approval. The president has therefore faced opposition in his policy actions. Even though the constitution provides room very rare cases of the executive executing powers without cooperation of the two, the president at times has made compromising executive orders that have faced lack of cooperation from the congress.
Therefore, recent and current policy debates have forced the president to trade his future back up by the congress. He has done so by cooperating with them to avoid future reluctance of the congress to support the president’s policies to strengthen his influence with the congress as well as public opinion. Doing otherwise will weaken his influence. This linking of issues can make it hard for the president to achieve his agenda.
