Press releases are one of the ways in which people can gather information about a recent event. It is also a way to mobilize people to act for or against something. This is why it important the press release follow rules that would ensure its effectivity in steering the people to act. The rules that is must be followed in creating press releases to ensure it effectivity is the Associated Press (AP) Style.
The press release that will be examined for this particular paper is from the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC), which aims to involve consumers in the energy market. This effort is a result of the Paris Climate Conference or the COP21. I was called the “COP21” since this Conference of Parties was already on its 21st time to be implemented. This is an effort to address the worsening case of global warming in the world, with greenhouse gasses as the main culprit. The message that this press release contains the issues on how countries can smoothly transition into to an economy based on low amounts of carbon dioxide emission. It discussed the key issues that encompass this effort. According to EESC (2016), the main issues that are yet to be solved in pursuing a low-carbon economy are the guidelines, laws, the participants of energy markets as well as major infrastructures. This press release is intended for the general public, especially to the heads of households because this is an effort to involve them as consumers in resolving issues related to energy use. The channel that this press release utilized in order to inform people is through the internet. This press release hast explicitly indicated a call to action to the consumers to be involved in the pursuit to help the environment, by doing their role as energy consumers, to act and help in solving the problem.
The 12 big rules of AP were accurately followed in this press release which made it more compelling for the audience. An example is the proper us of abbreviations such as EU and EESC. Lastly, is the rule for numbers, where it used ‘50’ for the number of European citizens.
