There are a number of similarities and differences between King et al.’s article on alcohol use disorders before and after bariatric surgery (2012), which is a primary source, and Tom’s 2012 review of this and other studies on the subject. The two articles, King et al (2012) and Tom (2012), have a number of similarities. First, both articles are divided into sections, almost all the sections appear in both including a background, methodology, results and a discussion. Second, the two articles objectively attempt to bring forward a better understanding of the relationship between alcohol disorders and bariatric surgery. They enhance the knowledge regarding the subject of the relationship between alcoholic disorders and bariatric surgery. Third, both articles are journalized by volume and issue. The primary source is the 23rd issue under volume 307 of the Journal of the American Medical Association (King et al., 2012), while the secondary source is a publication of the Drinking Report for Addiction Medicine (Tom, 2012).
There are several similarities between the two articles as well. One difference is that in the primary source by King et al (2012), the authors noted that the methodology used was an observational approach. Tom’s approach involved a literature review of existing sources, including the study done by King et al. (2012). Another difference regards the number of researchers involved. In the primary source, there were nine different researchers contributing to the study. In contrast, the secondary source had a single researcher, Tom, reviewing literature on the topic. Finally, while the primary source, reports new findings on the subject, the secondary source merely explores the existing findings on the subject and does not add any new findings, but attempts to help comprehend the preexisting findings.
